Goldberg shines at Players Cup
Aaron Goldberg fired a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Canadian Tour’s $300,000 Players Cup.Right behind Goldberg are fellow Americans Brock Mackenzie, Brady Stockton, Vince Covello and Jamaican Johnny Bloomfield.Four others, including Devin Carrey of South Surrey, B.C., are three shots back at 3 under.
Goldberg’s day was highlighted by a rare birdie at Pine Ridge’s difficult No. 9. Hitting 231 yards uphill into the wind onto a domed green, Goldberg stuck it to within five feet before sinking his birdie putt.
“I don’t know, but for a minute it looked like it had a chance of going in,” Goldberg said of his tee shot on a hole that has surrendered just 12 aces in almost 100 years of play.
“You’re happy to get out of there with par, so I’m obviously very pleased to steal a birdie.”
Three consecutive birdies beginning at No. 3 set up Goldberg for his two at No. 9 to make the turn at 4 under. He added two more birdies on the back to give himself sole position of top spot after day one.Like Goldberg, Bloomfield managed a birdie on No. 9 thanks to a 35-foot uphill putt for birdie.
“You have to take advantage of that hole when you can,” said Bloomfield. “That’s just a great golf hole.”
Winnipeg’s Adam Speirs, Ryan Williams of Surrey, B.C., and Danny Sahl of Sherwood Park, Alta., sit tied for 10th with four others at 2 under.
Vancouver’s Richard Lee, Victoria’s Jim Rutledge, Mark Kitts of Delta, B.C., and Adam Short of Vineland, Ont., shot even to sit with a group tied for 23rd.
Goldberg, who will turn 25 next week, has finished in the top-10 three times in 2010, including a runner-up finish to Mackenzie at the Times Colonist Open in Victoria.
“Being close a few times, I think it taught me a few things about what I did wrong coming down the stretch,” said Goldberg. “You learn from those things.”
The winner of the Players Cup gets a $48,000 first prize, but also an exemption into next week’s RBC Canadian Open in Toronto.
