Drive for five for Collings
For the 13th time overall and the fifth year in a row, Breezy Bend golfer Garth Collings has been named one of the finalists for the 2007 Labatt Manitoba Golfer of the Year honours, it was announced Monday. The four-time winner is joined by Matt Johnston of St. Charles, Pine Ridge’s Brad Kirton and Kaitlin Troop of Brandon and Clear Lake in the running for the award which will be presented at the Golf Manitoba annual general meeting and awards dinner, next Monday at the St. Boniface Golf Club.
The same four golfers were finalists for last year’s award which was won by Collings, also won in 1999, 2003 and 2005 and was a finalist in 1998, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004.
Collings, who earned berths on the provincial Willingdon Cup and mid-amateur teams this year, finished third in the Manitoba Amateur and fourth in the provincial Mid-Amateur as well as second in the Mid-Masters (over 40) division. He also finished 12th in the Canadian Mid-Amateur and third in the national Mid-Masters.
Johnston, who turned professional late in the season, was second at the Manitoba Amateur and was the low amateur at the 2007 Manitoba Classic.
Kirton was a double winner this season, capturing the Manitoba Amateur and Mid-Amateur titles and was the runner-up in the Manitoba Match Play championship. Nationally, he qualified and lost in the second round of match play at the Canadian Amateur and finished 15th at the Canadian Mid-Amateur.
Troop won the Manitoba women’s Amateur for the second straight year and placed fourth in the Canadian University Championships, playing for the University of British Columbia.
