Golfing in March? Without going to Palm Springs, Calif., or Orlando, Fla.? Absolutely!
Several golf courses in and around Winnipeg will open for business Saturday morning.
In the city, John Blumberg will have 18 holes ready for play, with another nine to open Sunday.
“I think it’s the earliest we’ve ever opened. And I’ve been here 30 years,” said Ben Smirnov, general manager of the Blumberg course.
Cottonwood, just east of Winnipeg on Highway 1, is opening Saturday at 8 a.m., while Kingswood near La Salle is also opening at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Fantasy Lake Golf Course, also located just east of the city on Highway 1, will open its course for play Saturday, the earliest it has ever opened.
The Winnipeg Canoe Club, also operated by Smirnov Golf Management, will open for business Sunday.
“Hopefully, two days after we open we don’t get a Colorado low moving in,” said Smirnov.
A low-pressure storm producing heavy snow could certainly happen.
It’s only mid-March, for goodness sake.
Smirnov said he remembers about five years ago the Blumberg course opened for play around March 23. Patrons enjoyed about six “glorious” days of golf — but then winter came roaring back to southern Manitoba.
“A Colorado low dumped about a bunch of snow on us, and it knocked us out for two weeks,” he recalled, with a laugh.
