Winnipeg Free Press Manitoba Classic Golfing Tournament

JAMIE FARR OWENS CORNING CLASSIC, Highland Meadows Golf Club, Sylvania, Ohio – The LPGA Tour moves to Ohio this week and to an event where Se Ri Pak dominates.

Pak won this event for the fifth time last year. She opened with a eight-under 63 on Thursday, then carded three more rounds in the 60s to cruise to a three- stroke win over Morgan Pressel.

They were the only two in contention as four players shared third place at minus-eight.

Pak’s other wins came in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003. Her win in ’99 came in a six-way playoff. She has nine top-10 finishes at the tournament in the past 10 seasons.

With her fifth win last year, Pak joined Mickey Wright and Annika Sorenstam as the only three players to win the same event five times.

The only other players to win this event multiple times are Kelly Robbins and Penny Hammel, who both won it twice.

ESPN2 has two hours of coverage the final three days of the events. The LPGA moves to Illinois next week for the LPGA State Farm Classic, where Sherri Steinhauer won last year.

NATIONWIDE TOUR

NATIONWIDE TOUR PLAYERS CUP, Pete Dye Golf Club, Bridgeport, West Virginia – For the first time in Nationwide Tour history, a tournament will have a $1 million purse.

The $1 million purse comes in the 554th event in tour history. The winning share will be $180,000.

That will be the largest first-place check in Nationwide Tour history, topping the $148,248 winners check from this year’s Moonah Classic.

The tour is in the midst of a five-week stretch with large purses. Next week’s $600,000 purse is the smallest during the run, where winners will nearly guarantee their PGA Tour cards for next season.

The Golf Channel will have two hours of coverage the first two days, then three hours of action on the final two days.

Next week is the Price Cutter Charity Championship, where Tom Scherrer won last year.

CANADIAN TOUR

TELUS EDMONTON OPEN, Windermere Golf Club, Edmonton, Alberta – Dustin Risdon returns to the spot of his first Canadian Tour win, the Telus Edmonton Open.

Risdon opened with a one-under 70, but went 18-under over the following three rounds to fend off Alan McLean by a single stroke.

The event moves back to Windermere Golf Club this year as part of a four- course rotation. The other three courses are Derrick Golf & Winter Club, Glendale Golf and Country Club and Edmonton Country Club.

The Canadian Tour Players Cup, where Mike Mezei won last year when the event was known as the Free Press Manitoba Classic.
