Winnipeg Native Usra Receives Golfing Honors
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association announced recently that Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils sophomore Tommy Ursa, a graduate of Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School and a resident of Caledon East, was one of nine NCAA Division I golfers named to the All-New England team following the NEIGA Championships.
Ursa finished in seventh place overall and had the fifth-lowest total among NCAA Division I competitors.
The Caledon East native shot 75-74 on the par 72 Captains Course in Brewster, Maine, which hosted the event held October 20-21.
Ursa plays out of Bolton’s Glen Eagle Golf and Country Club where his dad Luke is the general manager.
Medalist Matt Belizze and his Sacred Heart teammate Pat Fillian joined Ursa, Bryant’s Alex Daley, Jason Thresher and Scott Congdon, Dartmouth’s Peter Williamson, Quinnipiac’s Ian O’Connor and Brown’s Michael Amato on the All-New England team.
Ursa helped guide the Blue Devils to a third place finish in the 42-team field. Bryant collected the team title.
Orangeville’s Eric Hawerchuk, a teammate of Ursa, shot a 78 in the opening round and finished in the top 20. He was also on the Hall golf team when this duo led the school to its first ever Region of Peel golf championship four years ago. Eric’s dad, Dale, was a National Hockey League player for 16 seasons. He played in Winnipeg, Buffalo, St. Louis and Philadelphia. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971.
