Its an Open Golf Scramble
Five women will be extra happy after the final putt of the CN Canadian Woman’s Tour season falls into the cup on Tuesday.
Happy because they’ll have received sponsor’s exemptions into the CN Canadian Woman’s Open and satisfied for having done enough to earn those spots in the LPGA Tour event scheduled for Aug. 14-17 at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
There may also be some relief after the event at the Camelot Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
That would be particularly so for Massachusetts native Susan Choi, a recent cast member of Golf Channel’s Big Break, because she missed the deadline to register for Camelot and forfeited a chance to protect or improve on her third-place standing among players who aren’t already in the Woman’s Open.
The winner at Camelot will receive one of five exemptions from the Royal Canadian Golf Association, unless she’s already in the Open, in which case the fifth-place player on the Order of Merit would join the four ahead of her at Ottawa Hunt.
Five of the top nine are already in the Open: amateurs Sue Kim (two CN wins in 2008), Stephanie Sherlock (2007 Canadian champion) and Kira Meixner (sponsor’s exemption), non-exempt LPGA Tour member Jennifer Greggain (sponsor’s exemption) and Thai pro Wailailak Satarak (2007 tour victory).
Non-exempt LPGA members Cindy Pasechnik and A.J. Eathorne, Quebec woman’s champion Maude-Aimée Leblanc and 2007 Canadian PGA women’s champion Salimah Mussani also have exemptions, and another is reserved for the winner of the national amateur championship next month in Winnipeg.
