Telus Open
“Yesterday I said (my start) was amazing. What’s one better?” asked Ellis, who eagled his first hole, parred his second, got a hole-in-one on his third for another eagle, and then two more birdies to go 6-under after just five holes.
Saturday he was five-under through the first five holes.
“Eagle-par-eagle? That just doesn’t happen,” said Ellis.
Ellis shot a four-under 67 Sunday to finish at 18-under 266 for the week.
Parr, meantime, after a slow start with a double-bogey on his second hole was creeping up steadily.
Ellis’ first eagle was a tap-in — nearly holing his approach on the 500-yard par-5 for an albatross two.
Ellis didn’t nearly miss anything on his second eagle. This one from 171 yards hit three feet from the cup, took a little hop, rolled straight toward the pin and then in almost last gasp roll, gave a satisfying little clunk as it found the bottom of the cup.
But then that’s the kind of roll Ellis is on. He now has three wins in just seven starts on the Canadian Tour this year. The other four finishes were also like the Beatles — all Top-10s.
He also leads the Order of Merit, having won just under $75,000.
Adam Bland, Americans Daniel Im and George Bradford and Calgary’s Dustin Risdon will be joining Ellis at the Canadian Open at Glenn Abbey in Oakville, Ont., — the top five-money winners getting an exemption. So will the winner of next week’s Canadian Tour Players Cup in Winnipeg.
