Ben Hogan was such an exceptional golfer that he had three nicknames “Bantam Ben” , “The Hawk” and “Wee Ice Mon”.
The recalcitrant Texan , Ben Hogan , who was the quitest golfer on the golfing links , was argueably the most diligent pratice golfing player of all time. Hogan honed a golf swing that was close to perfect as any golfer could ever wish for.
Hogan’s daily regime included hitting a bag of golf balls for each club in his golf bag.
Hogan’s 66 victories included 9 majors . Five of these were major titles - three in the U.S. open. Ben Hogan was nearly killed in an car accident in Febuary 1949. Hogan and his wife Valerie were enroute from El Paso Texas to Phoenix when a Greyhound bus pulled out in front of Hogan’s car on a fog laden 2 lane highway.
Hogan relflexively threw his body across his wife as the bus hit them head on , an instinctive move that probably saved his life. Nethertheless the damage to his body was extensive and it was thought that he would never play golf again.
Amazingly Ben Hogan returned to golf when he returned to the U.S. Open Championship in 1950 at Merlon Golf Club just 16 months after the accident. Miraculously , Hogan survived the grueling 36 hole Saturday round , plus a playoff against Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio to win the second of four national championships.
