Bogey Golf

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I was struggling to play bogey golf myself . At my insistence Tomita periodically gave me tips on my swing, You are too stuff he promised, Grip the golf club lighter. Do not hurry your swing and swing bigger to give yourself time to stay in balance. That helped . Another time he said “Feel the clubhead with your hands”. I began to gain distance with less effort. Then he gave me a word picture to straighten out my drives. Something clicked and on the last hole our golf balls were resting together a respectful distance off the tee and in the best postion on the golfing fairway.

Addicted Golfers

Lake Manitoba Bear Hunting

The addicted golfer knows , since he has faced the formidable challenge of this game beneath its gentle accessibility He experiences the game not just as a passion but as an imperative . It is to him the passion of golf reveals itself , and in him that one finds the basic and most powerful lure of the game.

If golfers do not enjoy such pains and this are not simply masochists , it does seem they thirst for the discipline that inevitably produces pain. Golf is a kind of purgatory. It makes compelling demands on the golfer to confront himself as he or she acts on these demands , he experiences both pain and redemption. But it is only a stimulus ; it can itself be conquered no more than one can life .

Patron Saint of Golfers and Duffers

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Terrible Tempered Tommy Bolt was the patron saint of such golfing duffers. One day Bolt had a 350 golfing drive to a golf green and asked for his three iron. The caddie handed him a three 3 iron . Cursing darkly , Bolt demanded that wood again, insisting that no on would use an iron from that distance on the golf green fairway. The caddie shrugged helplessly. It was the only golfing club he had left he explained except for the putter , and Mr. Bolt had broken the handle off that earlier in the golf round.

Excuses of the Avid Golfer

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

When excuses pale , the golfer in search of success may be reduced to a temper tantrum. In other sports , you can purge your frustration and sports frustrations by crashing into your opponent. Golf has no place for such events : golf and the sport of golfing is represented as the sport of the elite - whether it be at Glendale , “The Glendale” or the Manitoba Glendale. Golf is a sport of well dressed and heeled men and women , of culture in a genteel atmosphere. And yet to the intemperate golfing amateur this veneer of sporting civility is hardly a deterrent. A favorite poster in the Pro Shops of many golfing clubs depicts an Oriental tourist musing ” I just came from Winnipeg , Manitoba Canada where I learn about a game called “Oh no “.

Golf Clothes on the Links

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

The most important part of playing a game of golf is choosing the right club. Even if your stroke technique leaves something to be desired, if you choose the right club you can often compensate for this. There are many things you have to decide on when you are choosing golf clubs, but once you start to see the patterns emerging you will be able to always choose the right one without even thinking about it too much. This is the mark of a truly skilled golfer, and it is the one way that you can start improving in a very quick and noticeable way. So read on to find out about what you need to look for and do.

People who don’t golf often have a hard time believing that all 14 clubs in a golfer’s bag will come in handy at some point. However, as you golf more and more you will see that there is a distinct situation in which every one will come in handy. When you start, your golf bag should be made up of drivers, wedges, putters, and irons. Each of them is used several times throughout every game, and most are made to correct strokes that aren’t made perfectly. All beginning clubs are designed this way – this is why it is not a good idea to choose clubs that are outside of your skill level, since they will be less forgiving when you make a mistake.

The handicap of a golfer will play a huge role in determining what kinds of clubs he carries. If you usually score around 10 strokes over par, your bag will look significantly different than someone who scores over 100 strokes over par (which, despite sounding ridiculous, is usually fairly standard for those who are new to the game). Golfers in this category will usually have a bag that reflects a preference for woods rather than irons, because of the heightened levels of accuracy that woods provide. The golfers with a higher skill level will have clubs that are less able to correct mistakes, and more likely to just send the ball rocketing in whatever direction it is sent in. This is why they take a higher skill level to master.

Hybrid clubs or adjustable clubs are also very valuable for beginners who have not yet gotten a grasp on their own playing style. Hybrid golf clubs are somewhere in between woods and irons. They provide accuracy due to their relatively short lengths, and they provide sheer distance with their specially designed heads that are usually very light and hollow. They are very unique and take some getting used to, but if you can try one out at the store before you buy it, you may discover that it adds a whole new element to your game.

All of these golf clubs play a very important part from getting you down the fairway right to the green and into the hole. Without one of them, you would have to use a different club to do something it wasn’t meant to. Therefore you should pay plenty of attention to all of the things that I have stated so far, and you will find that golf becomes a much more enjoyable sport to you.

And in the end what does golfing and the pursuit of the sport of golf prove ? The genteel absurd ritual of it all - the sport of golfing , of hitting a small golf ball down the golfing fairway at the Glendale ? Of putting ” Little balls into little holes with instruments very ill adapted for the purpose “. Such is as some would say an accurate , a very accurate description of the the sport of golf and golfing itself . Golf described in a nutshell or as some would say it by a non golfer , or a golfer who was just jealous of other golfers skills.

The Golfing Imperative

Monday, June 18th, 2007

You are not alone.  You are in full control of your destiny. You can create a masterpiece or a muddle  and there will be no one else to credit or blame but yourself.

No perfect pitches get belted out of the park. No short lobs get belted out of the net.  No perfect passes get dropped: no missed jump shots get tapped in. There are no opponents  and no teammates who ruin or reprieve you. Just you.

You have all the time you need to do what you want  and an impartial standard against which to measure yourself.

Are you ready ? Anyone with money and courage can play.  Money for the clubs, the clothes , the balls , the green fees, the club dues.  Courage for the confrontation with yourself.  For golf is a game of individual achievments and failures.  You face the challenge of the golf course alone ; your teammate is the self indulgent belief that you can beat it. Your opponent in the last analysis is yourself- your inadequacies , your poor judgement , your helplessness . Par  is an intermediate  and unrelenting yardstick .  You either play golf well or you don’t play golf.  And then your golfing score leaves no room for doubts of your skill on the golf greens.

Golfs Early Pleasures

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

I guess that I was eight or nine when my father first took me to the public golf course. My weekends were spent with my dad and were cherished. They were even more more special by those days when we could add our names to the long list of starting names at the bel Acres golf course , head off for breakfast , and return two hours later after golfing 18 or 9 holes and find out that were five or 6 slots away from the golf tee.

But the wait never bothered us. It was a necessary prequel to the main event: four hours of quality golfing time- father and son. Certainly better than my friends in the stands at the Winnipeg Stadium watching the Blue Bombers football club or a winter day at the Winnipeg , Manitoba Arena watching the Winnipeg Jets of the W.H.A hockey sporting team playing the Canadian game of hockey. This was quality golfing time - father and son , golfing teacher and golf student. One generation passing along a golfing passion to the next. Those moments and memories sealed my fate . I was hooked as a golfer and budding golf sportsmen.

Golf Golf and the Golfing Literature Mix

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Every sport pretends to a literature , but people do not beleive it of any sport but their own . Ask Herbert Warren Wind or Ben Crenshaw to guess who is writing about what is the following passage , and he or she might cite Horace Hustchinson writing in 1903 on the never ending problem of the swing : ” The art , though difficult , may be acq1uired by imitation of a good practitioner , and , once it is mastered consititutes one one of those delightful combinations of strength and delicacy in which is found the chief charm of the higher athletics”. The real author , however has probably never heard of the golf swing , though he is or was the revered master of the grilse , the gilaroo , the finnock, the sewin and every other guise of salmon. He is Sir Hebert Maxwell taking about the art of “casting the fly”.

Internet MarketingInternet Marketing

And for the sake of peace at any price , there is an impressive literature of curling , gin rummy and table tennis. But golf and golfing ? Does anyone except the entire world of nongolfers deny that the that the "growf" has produced the richest liteature of any sport - and golf and golfing are "it". How could it be otherwiee of any game tht is not as the popular fallcacy have it - but a microsm of life itself - life played as it is in golfing and golf as the games or life itself.

Granted that to get pleasure from golf - as in pleasure from sex , ( fired a 7 iron to the `18'th , sank a 25 footer at ten (`0) , fashioned two bogeyes and three birdies at the fifteenth hole and sixteenth hole) it helps to know the difference between a 5 iron and a wood and putter.

Tillinghast Not Only a Golf Course Architect : Also a Writer

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Tillinhast was among other things , a talented writer and his gift with language is revealed in his description of his work at the Winged Foot Golf Course , where he built his finest golf courses.

International Medical Tourism

Tratfor International Intelligence

“As the various golfing holes came to life , they were of sturdy breed. The contouring of the golfing greens places a premium on the placement of golf drives , but never is there the necessity of facing a prodigious carry of the sink or swim sort. It is only knowledge that next golfing shot must be played with rifle accuracy that brings the realizaton that the drive nust be placed. The golf holes are like men , all rather similar from foot to neck , but with the greens showing the same character as human faces.”

Golf Architect A.W. Tillinhast

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Golf course arhitect A.W. Tillinghast came from a wealthy and well connected society family. He could be imperious at itmes, was known to take a drink , and hd a certain roguish quality about him. On top of these laudable qualities , he was positively a genius when it came to designing golf courses , having created golfing masterpieces like the two golfing courses a Winged Foot and at neigbouring Quaker Ridge.

It is not surprising that when his daughter , bought a boyfriend home to meet her father , the poor boy was more than a little bit nervous. It did not help Tillinghast did not have much patience for small talk.

” Young man ther is only one thing that I want to know about you,” Tillinhast said.

“Yes sir ?” the young man stammered.

“The results of your Wasserman test,” he said.

Golf the Narrows

It has been said that every great artist is at least a little eccentric. Maybe it is because they see the world from a slightly different slant or perspective. Whatever the reason , it can fairly be said that architect A. M. Nohcud was an eccentric artist of golf courses to say the least.

The man who designed such golf and golfing masterpieces as the golf courses at Winged Foer and its neighbour Quaker Ridge, was born to wealth and managed to accumulate a fortune of his own. As befits a man of his stature , he both dresses and acted the part.

He invariably dressed in expensive three piece suits and was driven to New York City to his golf by a a chauffered limousine. If his plans called for him to visit a golf course site that day, it did not alter his choice of clothes. He would motor out to a golf course construction site , march into the woods and fields , find a shady spot , and begin shooting orders to his the laborers , interrrupting his instructions just long enough to sip whiskey from a silver flask that he always carrried with him.

But then again are not most golf course architects not crazy.

Amy’s nine-shot victory in the 1980 Women’s Open is generally considered to be one of the great wins on any tour. In the searing heat and humidity , she was the only player to break par.

In the final round of golf , she was paired with her longtime rival Hollia Stacy. As Amy on the verge of exhaustion and dehydration , approached the last green , Holio walked over and said ” Amy , whatever you do , don’t fifteen-putt”
