Golf Golf Golf’s History

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Golf was devised by the Scottish in the 14th or 15th century. It was banned at one time by the Scottish Parliament to ensure that its citizens practiced archery. In the 18th century, the first golf associations and clubs were formed, including the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (1744) and the Saint Andrews Society of Golfers. The latter is now called the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew’s.

The object of golf is to hit a little ball using a “club” into a hole some distance away. While the first golf clubs were fashioned from tree branches, today’s clubs are manufactured from graphite and titanium clubs for greater distance and accuracy. Golf courses typically have 18 holes, with long tree-lined fairways and manicured greens. To add to the challenge, some holes are protected by water barriers and sand traps, and the fairways surrounded by “rough” grass. Some holes are even hidden from the tee-off (with a bent “dog leg” fairway).

Manitoba Junior Golfers

Friday, August 17th, 2007

This province’s top junior golfers will play for pride this week in the Manitoba/Minnesota Matches at the White Bear Yacht Club in Dellwood, Minn.

The two-day event that begins tomorrow will feature the top eight junior men and top six junior women competing against their counterparts from the bordering state in best ball, alternate shot and individual matches in a Ryder Cup-style format.

“It’s been going on since the early 1980s, so there’s a long tradition in the event,” Golf Manitoba’s director of player development Garth Goodbrandson said yesterday from Saskatoon where he is with Manitoba’s men’s team at the Canadian Amateur.

“There’s been some fantastic players play (in it) over the years.”

Those players include the likes of local products Glen Hnatiuk, Rob McMillan and Todd Fanning. PGA Tour pro Tim Herron also played for Minnesota back in his junior days.

Manitoba’s men’s team in the event will be anchored by two-time junior champ Kevin Giesbrecht of Carman, while the girls’ team will be led by junior champion Chelsea Hummelt of Selkirk.

This event is one of the few times over their competitive careers that these golfers will experience a team atmosphere where they are playing for more than just themselves.

“It’s a nice team format that they don’t normally get,” Goodbrandson said of the event that alternates between the two districts every year. “It’s a great opportunity for the players and I know they all look forward to playing in it.

“There’s a lot of pride playing against the Americans. It’s an international event, so it is well respected.”

CANADIAN AMATEUR: Manitoba’s Mike Keast is in a six-way tie for fourth place after two rounds of stroke play at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at the Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon.

The Niakwa member came in with a 2-over-par 74 yesterday and will begin today’s 64-player match play event to determine the national champion as one of the top seeds.

Manitoba amateur champion Brad Kirton will also play in the matches. He finished in a tie for 37th with a two-day total of seven-over-par 151 and fired a one-over-par 73 yesterday to stay in contention.

Matlock’s Garth Collings qualified for a playoff for the final match play spots after finishing in a 15-way tie for 59th at nine-over-par 153. He carded a one-under-par 71 in the first round, but ballooned to a 10-over 82 yesterday.

Canadian Amateur men’s golf championship

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Canadian Amateur men’s golf championship, which continues until Friday at Saskatoon’s Riverside Country Club, has not been kind to a number of past champions and contenders.Early Tuesday morning, Calgary’s Todd Halpen fell by the wayside after losing out in a 15-golfer playoff held to determine the final six spots in the 64-player field moving on to match play competition.

Halpen — who was the 2006 Canadian Amateur championship runner-up to Richard Scott — was out of the picture quickly after bogeying the first playoff hole.

Manitoba’s Garth Collings — the 2003 Canadian Mid-Amateur champ — was another playoff victim.

Earlier, Langley, B.C.’s Darren Wallace — who, at 15, became the youngest-ever Canadian Amateur champion back in 2004 — failed to qualify for match play. So did three-time Amateur champ Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver, B.C., and New Brunswick’s Marc Bourgeois, a Canadian Amateur finalist in 2004.

As well, Cambridge, Ont.’s Victor Ciesielski, who made the cut at the 2006 Canadian Open as an amateur, couldn’t make the cut in Saskatoon.

A number of foreigners saw their trips to Saskatoon shortened. Australia’s Philip Watkins, based in Smyma, Tenn., failed to make the cut, as did Elliot Wainwright of California and Columbia’s Sebastian Pinzon-Naranjo.

Joey Benedetti, of Huntington Beach, Calif., did survive the cut. He qualified in the 22nd spot and was supposed to meet up against Brad Kirton of Winnipeg in his first-round match Tuesday. However, Kirton won by default after Benedetti was disqualified for an off-course incident.

- - -

Rules rule, after all.

A handful of golfers at this year’s Canadian Amateur championship have paid the price for a variety of infractions.

Benedetti was the latest to suffer the consequences after he violated the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s (RCGA) code of conduct.

New Zealand’s Brenden Stuart was assessed a pair of penalty strokes at the start of his round Monday for violating RCGA rules that forbid golfers from hitting golf balls between rounds at a non-designated practice site.

Stuart was caught hitting balls across the South Saskatchewan River behind the 18th hole Sunday night during the pitch-fork fondue night festivities. Even if his hitting escapade was all in good fun, it cost him a couple of strokes that were slapped on to the start of what would become an eight-over-par 80 Monday — but it did not prevent him from qualifying for match play Tuesday.

Stuart, from Wellington, N.Z., but currently based in Portirua, Wash., qualified as the No. 39 seed among 64 golfers with a two-round score of 151. He went on to win his first-round match Tuesday against Bradley Ingarfield of Calgary.

- - -

Prince Albert’s Ron Stewart signed the wrong score on his scorecard Sunday, so he was disqualified immediately from any possible match-play competition and his tally Sunday did not count toward the Willingdon Cup team competition that day. His mistake resulted in a three-stroke swing in Saskatchewan’s team total from 227 to 230 because each provincial team counts the best three of four team members’ scores and Stewart’s original score had been one of Team Saskatchewan’s top three.

He was allowed to play in the final day of the Willingdon Cup competition even though he was automatically disqualified from match play.

Earlier, Ontario’s Adrian Singh was penalized three strokes for slow play during the qualifier.

Kris Wasylowich’s hopes for a national amateur title were dashed on Wednesday as the Lethbridge, Alta., native was upset in third-round match-play by Fredericton’s Michel Landry at the Canadian men’s amateur golf championship.Landry, the No. 16 seed needed an extra hole to edge top-seed Wasylowich on the 19th. The match also saw Wasylowich fire a six-under-par score for 18 holes and pull even with Landry on the 18th after sinking a stellar 60-foot downhill putt.

“It’s tough to have a round like that and then lose,” said Wasylowich. “Mike played well, but it’s hard to swallow when you shoot a day like that.”

Landry, 22, credited being pitted against the No. 1 seed and using the underdog label as his motivation to advance.

“I don’t think anyone expected me to win today,” said Landry. “He had a lot of people rooting for him; I wanted to use that as motivation. I played it shot-for-shot and tried to hang in there.”

Nick Taylor of Abbottsford, B.C., continued to send a message as the No. 3 seed knocking off Darren Hupfer of Edmonton 7 and 6. Taylor has advanced easily through the match-play seedings, ousting Toronto’s Daniel Kim and Britt Pronk of London, Ont. Last year, Taylor lost to eventual champion Richard Scott of Kingsville, Ont., in the quarterfinals.
