Rebuilt others. Improved the drainage throughout the course and installed new state of the art sprinkler heads. Always enjoy golfing there.

Winnipeg Golf Service Revenues and Defecit

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Councillors also voted Tuesday to allow Winnipeg Golf Services, another Special Operating Agency, to forgo flat payments to the city in favour of handing over 10 per cent of its gross revenues each year.

Winnipeg Golf Services has an accumulated deficit of $2.8 million, but expects to gross $3.2 million next year, according to city documents.

Both changes still require the approval of Mayor Sam Katz’s cabinet and city council as a whole.

NIAKWA COUNTRY CLUB Golf Cart Vandalism

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

A 17-year-old boy faces a mischief charge after he — and possibly a few more youths — allegedly wreaked havoc on a Winnipeg golf course early Sunday morning.

NIAKWA COUNTRY CLUB

Const. Jacqueline Chaput, a spokeswoman for Winnipeg police, said cops were called to Niakwa Country Club golf course at 4:30 a.m.

“An employee had apprehended a male in custody for damaging some golf carts there,” said Chaput. “We arrested a youth.”

The teen is charged with mischief over $5,000.

JOYRIDING

An employee at the golf course, who asked not to be named, said she believed a few more youngsters took part in the incident but ran away before they were tracked down.

She said staff believed the kids may have been joyriding in the golf carts but it wasn’t clear how much damage they caused to the sprawling site.

“The property’s so big, I wouldn’t even know where it happened,” she said.

Elmwood Golf Course Golfer Chambers

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Swift Current resident Jeff Chambers has turned his love of golf and his passion for teaching kids into an exciting career that is also paying dividends for the junior golf community in the Southwest and across the province.

Chambers, who has been living in Swift Current for six years, is the Provincial Coach for Saskatchewan and focuses the bulk of his time and efforts towards junior development.

“Basically I travel the whole province in the Future Links vehicle and go to small towns and get junior programs going and get kids interested by being there as a professional and helping them out, said Chambers.

“From there I take a step on and put on high performance clinics and work with our elite players and try to help them out to become more competitive at not just the provincial level but also at Nationals. These are the kids that we are going to take four of to Nationals so I want to get them as prepared as possible. I develop the juniors and help them with mental training, technical training, all that kind of stuff and then I go with them to National events.”

Chambers, who is in his fourth year as the Provincial Coach after spending two years with the Elmwood Golf Club, admits that he has a soft spot for small town golfers.

“I love to see small town kids make it because I am a very small town kid from MacGregor, Manitoba and we lived out in the country so I had to stay in after school just to stay on the golf course. It was only nine holes, but I just played a lot of golf and I loved it. I got my Pro Card through the Lethbridge Community College. I have a passion for teaching and I love to help out kids. I was a hockey coach, a curling coach, and volleyball, I just like to help out and I thought why not put my two favorite loves together and that is what I am doing.”

Chambers also noted that Swift Current is starting to become recognizable on the golfing landscape.

“We stack up very well. For the size of Swift Current people notice that there are people from Swift Current in the field and that is a great thing. It all comes down to your junior development programs. I know when I worked at Elmwood I tried very hard to get kids interested. Both Chinook and Elmwood have done a great job of keeping junior golfers feeling welcome at the golf course which is very important to me. They support them being there they are not trying to chase them away. They want them there, which is great.”

Chambers pointed out that there are a number of young and up-and-coming junior golfers who are starting to make some noise including Taylor Smith, Kaitlyn Blackmer, Kaitlyn Jahnke, Katie Avram, John McConnell, and Mark Johnston.

“For a community our size they are definitely coming on. There is room for improvement but they are coming on. The Swift Current Comp. team is winning all of their competitions. But it is just a good sign that hey Swift Current has some talent and I personally am going to do whatever I can to help that through,” said Chambers.

Chambers also noted that for female golfers there is an abundance of options south of the border.

“For the girls it is as easy as you can possibly imagine. If Kaitlyn Blackmer and Kaitlyn Janke, and even Katie Avram continue to do this, anyone of those three could come to me and say I want a good scholarship, I could find them a full ride somewhere. For guys there is much more competition, it is just crazy how much more competition there is. For a player to get a full scholarship they would have to do something extraordinary at Nationals not just at the provincial level. I know a few kids who have gone down there but you also want a quality school. We are actually trying to talk a lot of kids into staying in Canada.”

Chambers believes that junior golfers in Swift Current are very fortunate two have access to two quality golf courses.

“We have two completely different kinds of courses. Elmwood would make you learn more shots, the punch shots, the draws, the fades, because you have more variety and elevation changes whereas Chinook is pretty laid out. At the same time you are dealing with superior greens over at Chinook where you are going to get a really good roll.”

Chambers stresses repetition and the mental aspect of the game with his elite golfers.

“Nobody in the province practices more then Taylor Smith. People know that they saw him out on the range on the worst days. I remember one day they were closing the course and he was still out on the range hitting golf balls. ”

“You have to practice and then you have to have the mental side and that is where Taylor had the biggest breakthrough this year. We started to work on that a lot more this year and he finally began to understand what I was trying to teach him in the mental game. Once the kids start to learn that then they become very gifted.”

While no Saskatchewan golfer has ever made the PGA Tour Chambers notes that things are improving.

“This year was the best year that we have ever had in the history of Saskatchewan. We had four people go to Nationals and all four made the cut, which is very hard to do, you are in the top 60 or 70 in all of Canada, so that is very impressive in itself.”

“Graham DeLaet from Weyburn will be our first player on the PGA Tour. He has already had seven or eight top tens on the Canadian Tout. I have seen him, I was with him the week before he turned pro at the Canadian Amateur and he is that good and he will make it,” says Chambers.

Chambers also work for the Maple Leaf Junior Tour which is based on giving kids the opportunities that they normally wouldn’t have and also runs four Saskatchewan based events for the MJT.

On August 18th-25th Chambers captained Team Canada’s trip to Scotland for five straight days of golf.

“It was just a fantastic event, it was one of the best trips I have ever been on. They played awesome and we just throttled them over there. It was nice because we got pretty beat up pretty bad last year and lost every match.”

Chambers also has recently been named an assistant coach to go to China in February.

More Manitoba Golfing Teams Fall Reults

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Three of the five spots on the Minnesota State men’s golf team are open for this weekend’s North Central Conference tournament. Jon Herzog would love to get one of those positions.

“It’s very important,” Herzog said. “That’s what we play for. It’s one of the biggest tournaments all year.”

Herzog took a positive step toward claiming one of the top-five positions by shooting the low score after 36 holes at the Minnesota State Invitational, played Monday at the Mankato Golf Club. Herzog shot 75-71—146 to take a one-stroke lead over teammates Brandon Loesch and Nick Pexa.

“I made a couple of dumb mistakes, but everybody does that,” Herzog said. “I left a lot of putts out there, I didn’t trust my stroke.”

Herzog, a junior from New Ulm, has averaged 75.8 strokes per 18 holes in two tournaments, with his best finish coming at North Dakota tournament two weeks ago, where he tied for 10th at 151. But he was disappointed when he didn’t qualify for last week’s Northwest Regional Head to Head tournament, the biggest event of the spring.

“The good thing about Jon is he’s a competitor,” Minnesota State coach Mike Zinni said. “He wants to be in the top five. We have some depth, but we need them to separate themselves from the pack. Jon did that today.”

Minnesota State I leads the tournament at 586 (296-290), with University of Manitoba I next at 594 (298-296). Minnesota State II was in third at 597, followed by Augustana I at 604, South Dakota I at 607, North Dakota at 608, Manitoba II at 629, South Dakota II at 643 and Augustana II at 643.

Pexa shot 72-75, while Loesch, who has clinched a pot on the team for next week, shot 75-72. Josh Angrimson, who also has a spot on the team, shot 74-76, and Kyle Welch had 80-72.

“These are the scores we should have and need to have,” Zinni said.

Kyle Bahe (75-74) and Bryant Black (76-73) led Minnesota State II at 149. Jimmy Fromm shot 151 (75-76), while Mitch Olinger had 156 (69-87) and Tyler Whiting had 156 (77-79).

The tournament concludes with 18 holes today, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Mankato Golf Club, and those scores will help to decide which Mavericks will play in the NCC tournament Oct. 6-8 at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Manitoba Golfing Hall of Fame New Inductees

Monday, October 8th, 2007

The Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum inducted four new members last night, two people who put in the time on the golf course and two who spent time covering them.

Stan Homenuik and Jim Collins were inducted in the athlete category, while Ralph Bagley and Ed Dearden — journalists who have spent over 50 years each covering the sport in print and radio — had their tickets punched in the builder category.

Homenuik started his life in golf in Yorkton, Sask., but spent most of his productive years in the Parkland region, where he was the head pro (and part owner) of the Dauphin Golf Club. Accepting the position in 1964 largely because ownership let him leave for long stretches in the summer to play on the Canadian Tour (he was on the circuit for 20 years), the 67-year-old can’t believe how the course pro lifestyle has evolved.

“When I was a pro, I opened up the shop in the morning and I closed the shop at night,” he starts. “Now it’s an eight-hour job, more like a normal job and that’s too bad. I loved being around the game. I never had a job. As my wife puts it, ‘When the sun comes up I went to the course and when the sun came down, then I came home.’ “

Homenuik, who spends a lot of time in Florida in the winter now, retired in 2001 and has a number of professional career highlights. He won the Manitoba PGA Championship in 1978, was named MPGA Player of the Year in 1985 and won the MPGA senior championship in 2003.

He joined his brothers Ted and Wilf in the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame, begging the question: Which Homenuik brother was more skilful with the sticks?

“I had a better drive and I was better with my irons, but they had a better short game,” Homenuik said. “They were good putters, I couldn’t putt a lick. Now we get together and play for a Pepsi and they want me to give them a stroke — they never game me a stroke back then. If you want strokes, go find somebody else to play with.”

Collins served as head pro at St. Charles for 37 years and had an impressive resume on the links. He won three Manitoba PGA championships, five Manitoba PGA senior championships and he was named Manitoba PGA Player of the Year in 1963, 1965 and 1977. Collins wasn’t finished there, winning the Canadian PGA Club Pro championship (1980) and the CPGA stroke play senior championship (1990). He also picked up CPGA Club Pro of the Year honours in 1976 and 1988.
