Popular golf and sportswear designer Linda Hipp announces that her company, LIJA, has hired Katherine Sivanish, Shawn Woods, the Burton Agency, and Sava Inc. as Sales Representatives to help service rapidly expanding demand. Sivanish, an exclusive representative for LIJA, will handle key accounts in Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho. Woods, a golf professional of more than 20 years, will service clients in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, while the Burton Agency husband-and-wife team will work with customers in Canada’s Maritime provinces.

Sava Inc., a family business with more than 30 years of experience as sales representatives, will represent LIJA to accounts in Quebec. Sava Inc. also represents ECCO and Second Skin.

“Katherine, Shawn, the Burton Agency and Sava Inc. all have extensive experience in the industry and are well-positioned to represent LIJA as a brand that fuses golf, fashion and leisure,” says Hipp, principal designer and founder. “They understand the broad appeal of our collections to golfers and non-golfers alike. We’re happy to have them on board.”

LIJA’s continued growth as one of North America’s leading golf and sportswear brands has been widely recognized. Most recently, for the third consecutive year PROFIT magazine named the brand among Canada’s 100 fastest growing companies.

The line’s Fall 2007 collections are currently available in stores and online. Shipping of the Spring 2008 collections – including the off-course Life of Leisure apparel – began earlier this month.

LIJA is a staple in finer golf and non-golf retailers across North America, including world-renowned resorts and clubs like Pebble Beach, Doral, Kiawah Island, Whistling Straights and Congressional. The company’s clothing is worn by scores of women golf professionals worldwide.

For more information, call 888.263.1191 or visit www.lijastyle.com to preview the Spring 2007 collections.

About LIJA

LIJA is a market leader in fashion-forward styles featuring feminine and comfortable silhouettes inspired by the fusion of sport, leisure and fashion. The brand’s distinctive excellence is driven by LIJA’s passion, commitment and dedication to creating innovative designs.

LIJA has received significant recognition within and outside the golf industry, achieving organic annual sales growth of at least 50 percent each of the past seven years. Enjoying a rapidly expanding sales force and account base in North America, LIJA recently began selling into the UK, Australian and Japanese markets

Recent recognition for the company includes:

• 2007 “Business of the Year” – Richmond Chamber of Commerce

• 2007 PGA Magazine – Resort Top Seller

• 2007 PGA Magazine – Private Course Top Seller

• 2007 Best of Show Honors at PGA Show – Golfing Magazine

• 2007 PROFIT 100 Rankings of Canada’s Fastest Growing Companies

• 2006 PROFIT W100 Ranking of Canada’s Top Women Entrepreneurs

• 2006 Business in Vancouver “BC’s 50 Fastest-Growing Companies”

• 2005 Canadian Golf Company of the Year – Score Golf magazine

Individually, Hipp has been honored as a grant recipient of the Matinee Fashion Foundation Award, which annually recognizes and funds select Canadian designers, and voted a “40 Under 40” winner by Business in Vancouver.

An avid and highly-skilled golfer, Hipp struggled to find on-course apparel that meshed with her off-course fashion sensibility. Recognizing a market opportunity – and the chance to combine her passions for fashion, golf and business – Hyp Golf was launched in July 1997.

The company re-branded as LIJA in late 2004. Chiefly influenced by both European trends and West Coast style, Hipp has garnered a widespread reputation as one of North America’s hottest sportswear designer

Life in Winnipeg - Telegraph Mentor

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Introduction: I moved to Winnipeg with my husband in 1996. My husband is English but grew up in Winnipeg and it was his lifelong wish to return there.

We finally decided to make the move after spending at least three vacations in the area, the last of which was spent doing as many mundane things as possible, including looking at housing and finding out where we could go grocery shopping.

My husband moved to Winnipeg before I did in order to look for a job. I remained in the UK paying the mortgage on our home in case things didn’t work out. It was a difficult period for us but well worth the sacrifice to get where we are today.

Geography and Climate: Winnipeg is situated in central Canada in the province of Manitoba. We have an extreme climate with long hot summers and long cold winters. Spring and Fall are very short lived although extremely beautiful.

To be comfortable in the summer most people have air conditioning in their houses. You can expect colder weather at night by Halloween but we have had several years without real snow until shortly before Christmas.

Winnipeg is geared up to the cold weather and it is quite easy to manage. Downtown Winnipeg has many indoor walkways so you can get between places without ever having to go outside. I used to feel colder in England than I do here.

Getting around: Winnipeg has an excellent bus system and an international airport although this is not a main hub and flying usually involves travelling through Toronto or Minneapolis. The US border is no more than half an hour’s drive away from the city.

Visas: Emigrating to Canada involves applying to the Canadian Consulate for Landed Emigration status. Our application took approximately a year. Landed Emigration is approved on a points basis.

Property: In Winnipeg house prices are lower than in other part of Canada although prices have been rising recently. Houses can be purchased for around $100,000 and upwards. An average price for rental is likely to be around $800 to $900 a month but cheaper places are available.

Leisure: Winnipeggers love outdoor sports in both the summer and winter. Hockey and Skidooing (riding on a motorised toboggan) are the favourites in winter.

Winnipeg has an Art Gallery, museums, a world class Symphony Orchestra and a large arena that hosts anything from local ice hockey to rock concerts. There is also a zoo.

Lake Winnipeg is more like a sea and the lake’s beaches are large and sandy. Winnipeg and the surrounding area is also a haven for golfers. There are close to 50 golf courses which are all very affordable.

There are several shopping malls but my particular favourite is St. Vital Mall. It’s home to three large chain stores as well as a wealth of other smaller stores. It is a light airy space and never gets anywhere as busy as high streets that I have visited in England.

I find it is possible to find most foods here that I used to eat in England but I am yet to find a good substitute for English bacon.

Four Canadian golfers head to PGA Tour qualifying school this week

Friday, December 14th, 2007

y
ou’ve got a veteran trying to get back to the top (Ian Leggatt), a Nationwide Tour player looking to take the next step (Brad Fritsch) and two unheralded pros hoping to win the equivalent of golf’s lottery (Lee Curry, Bryan DeCorso).

All four have just as good a shot as any of the other 150 or so players at Orange County National in Orlando, Fla., this week.

The first of six gruelling rounds goes Wednesday in what must be considered the toughest job interview imaginable. Golf can be a cruel game and it always seems to be at its cruellest during this event.

“Everything everybody says is pretty much right - it’s not a lot of fun,” Victoria golfer Jim Rutledge told The Canadian Press in a 2005 interview. “You’ve just got to stay focused no matter what happens during the week and make a lot of putts.

“That’s what it always comes down to.”

Leggatt has been through it before. The 42-year-old from Cambridge, Ont., finished fifth at qualifying school in 2001 to regain the PGA Tour card he’d first earned after graduating from the Nationwide Tour.

He’s also got a PGA Tour victory and a place in a pretty good trivia question. Leggatt won the 2002 Tucson Open on the same day Canada’s men’s hockey team won Olympic gold in Salt Lake City.

His career hit a snag in 2004 when he had to undergo two separate wrist surgeries because of carpal tunnel syndrome. Leggatt spent 2007 on the Nationwide Tour and earned just over US$25,000 - leaving him 151st on the money list.

That was slightly better than how Fritsch fared. The 30-year-old from Manotick, Ont., was 172nd in his rookie year on golf’s minor-league circuit.

Of course, a season of struggles would be completely forgotten if he managed to be among the roughly 35 players that will earn a PGA Tour card this week.

Fritsch participated in the final stage of Q-school in 2006, which gave him his Nationwide Tour status for this year. Prior to that he’d been a Canadian Tour member for a number of years and even considered giving up the game in the summer of 2005.

He’s played in a couple Canadian Opens and qualified for the 2006 U.S. Open.

Curry, meanwhile, has been a Canadian Tour member since 2003 and has only played a handful of events at a higher level. He missed the cut in two Canadian Opens and the two Nationwide Tour events he’s participated in.

The 29-year-old from Kemptville, Ont., once represented Canada at the world team amateur and will receive at least some status on the Nationwide Tour in 2008. He was 29th on the Canadian Tour money list with $18,588 in earnings this year.

DeCorso, a native of Guelph, Ont., spent the summer on the Gateway Tour. He went through the final stage of PGA Tour Q-school in 2003 and played a handful of Nationwide Tour events the following year.
