Four other golfers received an honourable mention from the selection panel – Aaron Cockerill of Teulon, Kevin Giesbrecht of Carman, Ryan Pitzel of Rossmere and Noreen Stewart of Southwood.

A second prestigious award was presented on Monday night to Don Forsyth of the Bel Acres G&CC as the second recipient of the annual Golf Manitoba Distinguished Service Award. Don has been involved as a volunteer with amateur golf since 1992 where he was a part of the first four person team to introduce course and slope rating in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. It has been my way of putting something back into golf” “Everyone who knows Don knows what a personable and dedicated individual he is,” said Trish Jordan, president of Golf Manitoba. “He has made a significant contribution to our Association over many years of service as both a Board member and active volunteer. Don is a well-respected and knowledgeable rules official and is a very deserving recipient of this prestigious award.”
Along with the Distinguished Service Award, Golf Manitoba also recognized all volunteers within the Association for their years of service to the association. Recognition was given to those individuals reaching the five, ten, fifteen, twenty and twenty-five plus years of service benchmarks.

Phil Mickelson didn’t waste any time making a few tweaks to his swing after losing second place to Sergio Garcia in the world rankings.
Mickelson said he got a refresher course from swing coach Butch Harmon before heading to Sentosa Golf Club for the US$5-million Singapore Open, an Asian Tour event that starts Thursday on an island just off the Singapore coast.
“I was just on the phone with him before we got here, just making little tweaks because driving the ball here in Sentosa is a real test,” Mickelson said. “There are tight fairways, a lot of water, a lot of penalties for poorly struck shots.”
Garcia, of Spain, won the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai on Monday to move past Mickelson and into second place behind Tiger Woods in the world rankings.
Mickelson will also have along a new putter when he challenges a field that includes the likes of Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, and K.J. Choi for the $792,500 top prize.

The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association announced recently that Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils sophomore Tommy Ursa, a graduate of Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School and a resident of Caledon East, was one of nine NCAA Division I golfers named to the All-New England team following the NEIGA Championships.
Ursa finished in seventh place overall and had the fifth-lowest total among NCAA Division I competitors.
The Caledon East native shot 75-74 on the par 72 Captains Course in Brewster, Maine, which hosted the event held October 20-21.
Ursa plays out of Bolton’s Glen Eagle Golf and Country Club where his dad Luke is the general manager.
Medalist Matt Belizze and his Sacred Heart teammate Pat Fillian joined Ursa, Bryant’s Alex Daley, Jason Thresher and Scott Congdon, Dartmouth’s Peter Williamson, Quinnipiac’s Ian O’Connor and Brown’s Michael Amato on the All-New England team.
Ursa helped guide the Blue Devils to a third place finish in the 42-team field. Bryant collected the team title.
Orangeville’s Eric Hawerchuk, a teammate of Ursa, shot a 78 in the opening round and finished in the top 20. He was also on the Hall golf team when this duo led the school to its first ever Region of Peel golf championship four years ago. Eric’s dad, Dale, was a National Hockey League player for 16 seasons. He played in Winnipeg, Buffalo, St. Louis and Philadelphia. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971.

GIMLI — Tyler Mancini of Pine Ridge was pretty pleased to be the only player in the 60s on a miserable Day 1 of the Manitoba men’s amateur golf championship at Links at the Lake.
Nobody, however, was beaming brighter than former four-time champion Todd Fanning, who rediscovered an old friend — amateur golf.
“I was curious as to how I would play, not really what I would shoot, because even when I’ve been hitting the ball poorly, I’ve been scoring OK,” said Fanning, who shot even-par 72 in his first major competition since regaining his amateur status in January. “I’m ready to go. This is good. I hit the ball very solid today. I impressed myself.”
Fanning, 40, played as a touring professional for 10 years. He’s a four-time Manitoba golfer of the year and a member of the province’s golf hall of fame.
But it rained and blew on him like everyone else at Links on Monday, creating an unusual challenge at the 6,590-yard David Grant-designed course near the shore of Lake Winnipeg.
“This course was designed for a west wind and it blew out of the southeast and it rained and it was cold so I’m quite happy with 72,” said Fanning, who stood in a tie for third, four shots back of Mancini’s smart 68.
The only player between them was the only other player under par, former two-time champ Garth Collings of Breezy Bend, who was grumpy after a 71 because he bogeyed the last two holes by going in the water.
Mancini, 24, has been a top-10 finisher at the last three amateurs and showed Monday he means business again.
None of the top-10 players after Monday action had a worse start but Mancini recovered with gusto after making a double-bogey six at the par-4 second, a driveable 347 yards with the wind.
“I was two-over after two but I realized this is a marathon,” Mancini said after blading a sand wedge out of the greenside bunker out of bounds. “I’m proud of myself for staying with it.”
He rallied with four birdies in a row between Nos. 5 and 8, and nearly birdied the ninth. In all, he had seven birdies to set the pace.
Tied with Fanning in third spot are Breezy’s Brad DePape, Glendale’s Michael Goldberg, who birdied the last hole, and Southwood’s Shawn Baker.
Defending champ Brad Kirton of Pine Ridge was in a large group at 73 that included Niakwa’s Scott Markham, Pine Ridge’s Scott Loewen, Derek East of St. Charles and Eric Johnson of Breezy Bend.
“If you’d told me I’d be 71 at the start of the day, I’d have thought that wasn’t good enough,” Collings said after his stumbling finish. “This golf course, somebody will kill it. Maybe not in this wind, but Tyler was 68. I had a 66 on the board, four-under after 12 …and I just hit a couple of bad shots coming home.”
Fanning had said prior to his first amateur in 16 years that he was worried about his play from the tee

JAMIE FARR OWENS CORNING CLASSIC, Highland Meadows Golf Club, Sylvania, Ohio – The LPGA Tour moves to Ohio this week and to an event where Se Ri Pak dominates.
Pak won this event for the fifth time last year. She opened with a eight-under 63 on Thursday, then carded three more rounds in the 60s to cruise to a three- stroke win over Morgan Pressel.
They were the only two in contention as four players shared third place at minus-eight.
Pak’s other wins came in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003. Her win in ’99 came in a six-way playoff. She has nine top-10 finishes at the tournament in the past 10 seasons.
With her fifth win last year, Pak joined Mickey Wright and Annika Sorenstam as the only three players to win the same event five times.
The only other players to win this event multiple times are Kelly Robbins and Penny Hammel, who both won it twice.
ESPN2 has two hours of coverage the final three days of the events. The LPGA moves to Illinois next week for the LPGA State Farm Classic, where Sherri Steinhauer won last year.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
NATIONWIDE TOUR PLAYERS CUP, Pete Dye Golf Club, Bridgeport, West Virginia – For the first time in Nationwide Tour history, a tournament will have a $1 million purse.
The $1 million purse comes in the 554th event in tour history. The winning share will be $180,000.
That will be the largest first-place check in Nationwide Tour history, topping the $148,248 winners check from this year’s Moonah Classic.
The tour is in the midst of a five-week stretch with large purses. Next week’s $600,000 purse is the smallest during the run, where winners will nearly guarantee their PGA Tour cards for next season.
The Golf Channel will have two hours of coverage the first two days, then three hours of action on the final two days.
Next week is the Price Cutter Charity Championship, where Tom Scherrer won last year.
CANADIAN TOUR
TELUS EDMONTON OPEN, Windermere Golf Club, Edmonton, Alberta – Dustin Risdon returns to the spot of his first Canadian Tour win, the Telus Edmonton Open.
Risdon opened with a one-under 70, but went 18-under over the following three rounds to fend off Alan McLean by a single stroke.
The event moves back to Windermere Golf Club this year as part of a four- course rotation. The other three courses are Derrick Golf & Winter Club, Glendale Golf and Country Club and Edmonton Country Club.
