Local Saskatchewan Golfer

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

A Saskatoon golfer had not won the Saskatchewan Amateur women’s golf championship since Cortney Joyce in 2002.

Ashley Olynick changed that, not to mention her own tee trend.

Olynick tossed a 300-pound gorilla off her back, winning her first provincial Amateur title after being the runner-up three years in a row.

“It’s a big win,” Olynick said after shooting a 3-over 75 Friday for a four-day total of 16-over 304. “I mean it’s provincials. Now I’m like ‘OK, now I can go out and win more.’ Nationals is my next goal.

“It didn’t really bother me getting second. It’s in the back of mind, of course, but I just want to shoot low scores, whatever the outcome. Obviously, a win is good.”

YOUNG ONLY 14 YEARS OLD

Olynick leads the provincial women’s team for the Royale Cup national women’s Amateur championships July 28 to Aug. 1 at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg. The Willows golfer is joined by Moon Lake’s Kyla Reay (78–309), The Willows’ Ginelle Giblett (81–322) and Riverside youngster Anna Young (82–325) on an all-Saskatoon team. Riverside’s Kim Brown (84–321) was the third lowest qualifier, but she won’t be able to play at nationals, so Young was bumped up to fill the vacancy.

“Good team,” said Olynick, a 2004 provincial junior champion. “Anna’s just a new up-and-comer junior, but she’s really good. She’s really accurate. She’ll be a good asset to the team. Kyla is always real consistent and a good player. Ginelle, too. She went to school (in the United States), so she knows what serious, competitive golf is all about.”

Giblett, at 22, is the oldest, followed by Olynick, 21, Reay, 19, and Young, a mere 14.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Young, who’s going into Grade 10 at Holy Cross High School. “I’m going to try and make the team for junior, too. I’ve been to some out-of-town tournaments the past couple of years, so I don’t really get intimidated very easily.”

GIBLETT PLAYS AT U.S. COLLEGE

Reay, a three-time provincial junior champion, played it close to Olynick, but her hopes faded by going 3-over during the final holes compared to 1-under for Olynick.

“I tied it up around 14 and then I didn’t do too good after that,” Reay said. “The last hole I went into the bush (for a double-bogey). Other than that I was par-par. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Reay has played on four provincial junior teams. This is her second Amateur team.

Giblett, a native of Bengough, moved to Saskatoon in June after completing the school year at Chicago’s Robert Morris College on a golf scholarship.

“I’m very excited,” she said. “I haven’t played too much. To be able to make the team is great. It’s all I could ask for.”

Brown, 27, is disappointed at missing nationals. She is scheduled to go to Ottawa for work.

“I haven’t been playing a lot of golf the last four years,” said Brown, who played on the Saskatchewan junior team in 1999 and the provincial Amateur team in 2001. “It was nice to come out. Overall, it was a good tournament.”

Clare golfer shoots all four rounds in 70s to take Amateur title

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Digby’s Anne Balser, another 20-year-old, recovered from a shaky third round and posted a 75, her best score of the tournament, to finish fourth.

LeBlanc and Balser will be among the foursome representing Nova Scotia at the Canadian Women’s Amateur championship that begins July 29 at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg. Joining them will be 19-year-old Laura Harris of Ken-Wo, who finished in second place Saturday, and 14-year-old Irene Jung of The Links at Penn Hills.

Already blessed with a 10-stroke advantage heading into Saturday’s round at West Pubnico Golf and Country Club, LeBlanc fired her best round of the tournament — a 3-over 75 — to easily take the four-day provincial championship by a whopping nine shots over defending champion Laura Harris of Ken-Wo.

LeBlanc, who plays out of Clare Golf and Country Club, had rounds of 76-79-79-75 to claim her first Amateur crown. She finished second last year to Harris, a reverse of this year’s results.

Balser’s rounds of 82-79-90-75 gave her a total of 326, leaving her 17 strokes behind LeBlanc who began Saturday’s final round with a 10-shot lead.

Amateur Golf Rounds

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Mireille Leblanc shot four impressive rounds of golf in the 70’s to cruise to victory at the NSGA Royale Women’s Amateur Championship over the weekend.

Leblanc, a 20-year-old from Clare, finished Saturday with a 3-over 75 at the West Pubnico Golf and Country Club to finish nine strokes ahead of defending champion Laura Harris of Ken Wo.
Penn Hill’s Irene Jung, only 14 years old, finished third. Anne Balser of Digby Pines came fourth, clinching the final spot on the Nova Scotia squad heading to Winnipeg for the Canadian championships beginning July 29.

On the Senior Circuit, Kathy Powers of the Bluenose Golf Club came back from a five-stroke deficit in the final round to win the 2008 Senior Women’s Championship Saturday.

Defending champion Powers shot a tournament-best 74 to overtake Jean Boudreau of Hartlen Point by two strokes. The victory is Powers’ 18th provincial championship.

History of Royal Birkdale Golf Course

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Founded in 1889, the Royal Birkdale Golf Club’s history plays like a roll call of great golf events: eight British Opens, two Ryder Cups, Walker and Curtis Cups, and multiple Woman’s British Opens.

This week, the club in the northwest England town of Southport adds to its prodigious past when it plays host to British Open No. 9. TSN airs all four rounds Thursday through Sunday, July 17-20.

The par-70 Royal Birkdale is considered England’s top course and offers a number of challenges along its 7,180-yard length, not the least of which is the nearly constant wind off the Irish Sea. Other obstacles golfers will have to cope with include towering sand dunes and treacherous rough.

The last time the Open was played here in 1998, Mark O’Meara overcame rain and wind to win in a four-hole playoff. Padraig Harrington took last year’s tournament at Carnoustie in Scotland, also in a playoff.

Without Tiger Woods in the field, Harrington and the other top pros, including Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, Trevor Immelman and Sergio Garcia, will have an easier time of it in their pursuit of the Claret Jug.

Duchscherer 2-Hits Mariners; Pelfrey Goes 7

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The Oakland A’s traded away their top starter, sending pitchers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs in exchange for four young prospects. But Harden will barely be missed if Justin Duchscherer (10-5) continues to pitch like he did on Tuesday, blanking the Mariners on 2 hits in a 2-0 Oakland win.

Of 105 pitches, Duchscherer threw 72 for strikes, recording 4 strikeouts without walking a batter. The only hits allowed were a Richie Sexson double in the 5th inning and Miguel Cairo’s single to lead off the 6th. Duchscherer retired the final 12 batters in order, striking out of Raul Ibanez to end the game.

Notes: Will Cleveland ever win another game? The Indians’ losing streak stretched to 9 games Tuesday, dropping a 9-2 decision at Detroit. Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4, with a pair of homers and 3 RBI.

Rays of hope… Just when the Rays were getting comfortable in first place, along comes Andy Pettitte and the NY Yankees to spoil the party. Pettitte shut out Tampa Bay over eight innings as the Yanks won 5-0, moving to within 7 1/2 games of first. Boston was out beating Minnesota, 6-5, to pull to within 3 games of the Rays.

National League

mpelfrey Duchscherer 2 Hits Mariners; Pelfrey Goes 7Mike Pelfrey (7-6) allowed just 3 hits over 7 innings as the Mets blanked the Giants, 7-0 to move into a tie for second place in the NL East with Florida, 1 1/2 behind slumping Philadelphia.

Pelfrey was in complete control, fanning five, while getting 10 of 16 other outs via grounders. The Mets have won four straight while the Phillies lost their 4th in a row, losing 2-0 to St. Louis.

Notes: In the escalating NL Central arms race, recently-acquired C. C. Sabathia won his first start for Milwaukee, allowing 2 earned runs over 6 innings as the Brewers topped Colorado, 7-3.

LA’s flirtation with first place in the NL West didn’t last long. A day after tying the Diamondbacks for top honors, the Dodgers lost 9-3 to Atlanta, while Brandon Webb was recording his 13th win in a 2-0 Arizona win at Washington. The D-Backs have re-established a 1-game cushion in the division.

Weiss thrives under pressure

Friday, December 19th, 2008

“I focus better,” said Weiss, 19, who is playing her first year on the Saskatchewan Golf Association’s women’s order of merit tour. “I don’t know what it is about tournaments, but I get psyched, I focus more, and I really play. I like competition.”

Weiss has spent many years in competition while golfing in junior women tournaments.

Weiss started playing following her father, Larry, around the golf course — first the Royal Regina Golf Club, then the Emerald Park Golf and Country Club (now Aspen Links Country Club). Crystal also grew up playing many different courses around the province, so in the future playing a new course wouldn’t be a challenge.

Weiss began playing in tournaments when she was 14, starting with local tournaments. The next year she played in her first Saskatchewan junior women’s championship in Yorkton.

“I placed sixth and was really happy with that,” said Weiss. “Then the next year I moved up a spot, and every year got better.”

Weiss made the Saskatchewan junior women’s team in her last two years of junior eligibilty and played in the Canadian junior championships in New Brunswick, and then London, Ont. However New Brunswick wasn’t her first national experience — she played in the Canadian junior women’s championship a year earlier in Moose Jaw, entering as an individual.

“It was just about the experience at that time,” said Weiss.

Experience has helped Weiss. As a junior, she played in seven to 10 tournaments per season. She also spends a great deal of time practising and playing. For the past four years, she has trained with golf coach Garth Zummack beginning each year in January.

With all of the commitment, Weiss has put into her golf game, it wasn’t even a question to her as to whether she would carry on competing after junior golf.

“I always planned on moving on and playing with the women, because I’ve worked really hard,” said Weiss. “I’ve put a lot of effort into my game, so I wasn’t just going to stop after juniors.”

Weiss has taken it a bit easier this season after her competitive and busy summer last year. Weiss, going into her second year as an Arts student at the University of Regina, also works at Shoppers Drug Mart, which is flexible with her golfing schedule.

This season, Weiss has played in the P.A. Ladies Northern tournament, and is playing in the Saskatchewan amateur women’s championship this week at the Melfort Golf and Country Club. Weiss hopes that is followed by an appearance in the Canadian women’s amateur championship, July 28-Aug. 1, in Winnipeg.

There are differences between the junior women’s and women’s amateur tournaments. Most importantly, there is much more competition and more players in the women’s tournaments, and now women can have caddies. For Weiss, this has been Larry, as he has been golfing with Crystal since she first started playing.

“We have some work to do,” they both said, laughing, on how the partnership is working so far.

“I mostly just pull the clubs and keep quiet, unless she asks me for an opinion,” said Larry. “But golf has been great for her . . . she’s really enjoying it and looking forward to playing more with the ladies.”

While Zummack has brought Crystal’s swing to where it’s at now, Larry has helped with the mental development that Crystal is so competent in.

“She’s made a lot of progress,” said Larry. “But it’s one step at a time, in a long process . . . the mental aspect of her game improves every year.”

In addition to her ability to perform under pressure, Crystal has always excelled at putting – the short game, of course, is key in tournament play.

Weiss has reached her goals in the past — making the Saskatchewan junior women’s team when she was 17, and excelling in tournaments. She recalled the first time she played match play in the Junior girls Lobstick in Waskesiu, and the rush of adrenaline in winning on the last hole. Now that Weiss is playing in a new category, she has new goals.

One of the goals was to play her best in Melfort at the Saskatchewan women’s amateur.

Wintertime Canadian Golfing Practice

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Brad Phelps of Saskatoon took up golf at the ripe age of 30. Now, 13 years later, he has blossomed into one of the province’s top players.

Phelps, 43, is just one decent round away from winning the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur championship, which wraps up today at the Melfort Golf and Country Club.

Phelps shot a 1-over 73 Thursday afternoon, giving him a three-day total of 10-under 206. He is five strokes ahead of Dallas Lequyer of Lethbridge going into the final round.

“It would be nice to win something big, but I’m not looking at that,” Phelps said. “Winning is not the reason why we’re here. We’re trying to play well and if winning comes with it, that’s great.

“I’m here to make the (four-person provincial) team and represent our province. If winning comes with it, that’s just icing on the cake. That would probably be the biggest thrill I’ve ever had.”

Phelps has fine-tuned his game through the years with help from friends. His constant golf companion is Colin Coben, a fixture on the provincial golf scene and a two-time Saskatchewan Amateur champion.

“I’ve been probably travelling with Colin for six or seven years,” Phelps said. “You’re talking about one of the best amateurs in the province. I ride with Colin. We stay together. I get lots of tips. He’s helped me out tremendously.”

Lequyer fired a 2-under 70 Thursday. Prince Albert’s Martin Ring is third at 216 after carding a 74. Regina’s Tyler Wright, who shot a 72, is fourth at 217. Claude Bourgault of St. Brieux is fifth at 219, followed by Delisle’s Coben, Regina’s Rick Ledingham and Melfort’s Lawrence Campeau, all at 221.

Phelps learned to golf with help from club pro Brad Vinnick during his days at Holiday Park. In 13 years he has won the Holiday Park Open seven times.

His big breakthrough was when he took an early lead at the Central Am about six years ago.

“Six-under after two days and guys are looking around, wondering ‘Who’s that guy?’ and I’m up there having a beer and enjoying golf.

“Then the wind came up — I’m a high-ball hitter and my ball was going everywhere. I’ve kind of learned to bring it down and play the wind a little bit. Colin and Brad Vinnick have helped me out with that.”

In recent years, Phelps has become a year-round player.

“I put lots of time in during the winter,” he said. “I went to that indoor golf simulator and I got a membership there. I was playing three times a week just so I could keep swinging.”

Coben, who won the Sask. Mid-Am in 2000, would like to see his protégé win today.

“He’s got the game,” Coben said of Phelps. “Hopefully he finishes it off and wins the Mid. It would be good for Saskatchewan to get it back because we haven’t won it for a few years.

“He deserves it. He puts a lot of time in. We’ve been bugging him all winter, saying ‘Champion of the golf simulator, how are you doing?’

“You’ve got to watch what you tell him now. That’s what I told him the other day: ‘You’re beating me now — I’m not teaching you anymore.’ ”

Reay’s day at women’s Golfing Amateur

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Reay, who recently completed her first year of college golf with the Alabama State University Hornets in Montgomery, carded 14 pars Wednesday to go along with a birdie and two bogey’s for a 1-over 73.

With her solid second round, Reay jumped ahead of fellow Saskatonian Ashley Olynick on the leader board at 7-over 151.

Olynick is four shots off the pace at 155. On Wednesday, Olynick shot a 6-over 78, which included two birdies. She had a fine front nine with a 36, but took a triple-bogey seven on No. 11 on her way to a 42 through the back.

Saskatoon’s Kim Brown and Anna Young are tied for third at 163. Brown shot an 81 with nine pars and nine bogeys. Young carded eight pars, eight bogeys, a birdie and a triple-bogey eight on the par-5 No. 8.

The Amateur continues through Friday.

The top four finishers will represent Saskatchewan in interprovincial team competition at the Royale Cup Canadian Amateur at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg from July 28 to Aug. 1.

Phelps leads Mid-Amateur

Saskatoon’s Brad Phelps has an eight-stroke lead in the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur, also being played at the Melfort Golf and Country Club.

Phelps fired a 1-under 71 Wednesday after a course-record 62 Tuesday. He is at 11-under 133.

“It’s nice to have that cushion, but there’s still lots of golf to play,” Phelps said. “There are still two more days.”

Dallas Lequyer of Lethbridge is second at 3-under 141. Prince Albert’s Martin Ring is third at 142 and Claude Bourgault of St. Brieux fourth at 143.

Phelps is looking for his second-ever berth on the Saskatchewan team. He made the provincial team two years ago.

Four spots are up for grabs on the men’s squad which moves on to the Canadian Mid-Amateur championships in Qualicum Beach, B.C., from Aug. 18 to 22. The team must include a minimum of two players age 40 or older.
