Moar leads Portage quartet at amateur

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

One Portage la Prairie golfer is ahead of the game at the provincial men’s amateur golf championship, while three others have some work to do to make sure they stick around for the final two rounds.

Bryce Moar finished his rain-delayed first round Tuesday morning with a mark of 7-over 79 to sit tied for 45th place at the event at Links on the Lake in Gimli.

After Tuesday’s second round, those sitting in the top 60, plus ties and those within 10 strokes of the leader will advance to the third and fourth rounds Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Tyler Mancini of Winnipeg’s Pine Ridge Golf Club had the clubhouse lead after the first round with a 4-under 68.

Portage’s Miles Sullivan is two strokes over the current cut line of 8-over, as he played his entire round of 10-over 82 on Monday to settlie into a tie for 73rd. Fellow Portager Dean Cairns also completed his first round on Monday and fired an 85 to sit in a tie for 95th place at 13-over.

Sue Kim runs away with title

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Kim led from start to finish and blew away the field by seven shots at Sunnydale Golf Club in Courtenay. The 17-year-old Kim, who also won the title in 2005, birdied eight of her first 12 holes and shot a four-under 69 Thursday to finish the event at what is believed to be a tournament record total of 12-under par.

Thursday’s win was Kim’s third this season. Earlier, she won the first two events on the Canadian Woman’s Tour after heading into the season without a win in some time.

Apparently, her slump is over.

“It feels great to win,” Kim said after the round. “I feel like I’m getting back on track. I’m just feeling more focused than I have in the past.”

Soo-Bin Kim, a 15-year-old from Port Coquitlam, placed second at five-under par after closing with a final round of two-under 71. Christine Wong, 16, of Richmond, and 16-year-old Amanda Baker of Nanaimo tied for third place at four-over par. They will join Sue Kim and Soo-Bin Kim on the B.C. team at the Royale Canadian Junior Girls Championship Aug. 4-8 in Winnipeg.

Jessica Wallace of Langley, who had won the event the past two years, finished fifth at six-over par.

As impressive as her 12-under total was, Kim said she could have gone a whole lot lower if not for a couple of holes that gave her fits this week.

“I played the eighth and 17th holes seven-over par this week,” she said. “I just couldn’t figure them out.”

Kim, a member of Canada’s national amateur team, has a busy summer ahead of her. In addition to the Canadian Junior, she will be playing in another Canadian Woman’s Tour event next week in Ottawa, the Canadian Amateur in Winnipeg at month’s end and has earned an exemption into the CN Canadian Woman’s Open next month at Ottawa’s Hunt Club.

“I am looking forward to all of those events,” Kim said. “I’ve never won the Canadian Junior and it will be fun to play with and learn from the LPGA pros at the Canadian Woman’s Open.”

J ame s , wh o plays out of Cataraqui Golf and Country Club, closed out the woman’s 54-hole championship with a 78 and a three-round total of 234. She was the top Kingston District golfer, edging club mate Danielle Greene for that honor by one shot. Greene shot 79 yesterday.

James will play at the Western Junior,

a top invitational event in the United States, instead of playing at the Ontario Junior in Goderich. Canadian Golf hall of famer Marlene Streit will accompany James to the Western Junior.

While James is opting out of the Ontario Junior due to the conflict, she will still play in the Royal Canadian Golf Association junior woman’s championship in Winnipeg, Aug. 4-8 at the St. Charles Golf Club.

Nicole Vandermade, an 18-year-old from Brantford, wrested the Ontario title away from Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown in a terrific back-nine duel yesterday.

Its an Open Golf Scramble

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Five women will be extra happy after the final putt of the CN Canadian Woman’s Tour season falls into the cup on Tuesday.

Happy because they’ll have received sponsor’s exemptions into the CN Canadian Woman’s Open and satisfied for having done enough to earn those spots in the LPGA Tour event scheduled for Aug. 14-17 at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.

There may also be some relief after the event at the Camelot Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

That would be particularly so for Massachusetts native Susan Choi, a recent cast member of Golf Channel’s Big Break, because she missed the deadline to register for Camelot and forfeited a chance to protect or improve on her third-place standing among players who aren’t already in the Woman’s Open.

The winner at Camelot will receive one of five exemptions from the Royal Canadian Golf Association, unless she’s already in the Open, in which case the fifth-place player on the Order of Merit would join the four ahead of her at Ottawa Hunt.

Five of the top nine are already in the Open: amateurs Sue Kim (two CN wins in 2008), Stephanie Sherlock (2007 Canadian champion) and Kira Meixner (sponsor’s exemption), non-exempt LPGA Tour member Jennifer Greggain (sponsor’s exemption) and Thai pro Wailailak Satarak (2007 tour victory).

Non-exempt LPGA members Cindy Pasechnik and A.J. Eathorne, Quebec woman’s champion Maude-Aimée Leblanc and 2007 Canadian PGA women’s champion Salimah Mussani also have exemptions, and another is reserved for the winner of the national amateur championship next month in Winnipeg.

Kirton was a three time champion in 2008, winning the Men’s Match Play Championship in early June and following it up with victories at both the Manitoba Amateur and Mid-Amateur titles in July. He was a member of the Willingdon Cup squad that placed second at the Canadian Amateur, where he tied for 40th individually. Kirton is 29th on the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s National Order of Merit.

The other finalists for this premier award for amateur golf in were GARTH COLLINGS of Breezy Bend, JILL HARDY of and PETER MORE also of Elmhurst. Four other golfers received an honourable mention from the selection panel – Aaron Cockerill of Teulon, Kevin Giesbrecht of Carman, Ryan Pitzel of Rossmere and Noreen Stewart of Southwood.

The Labatt Amateur Golfer of the Year Award dates back to 1975, and was presented for the 34th time on October 20th.

A second prestigious award was presented on Monday night to Don Forsyth of the Bel Acres G&CC as the second recipient of the annual Golf Manitoba Distinguished Service Award. Don has been involved as a volunteer with amateur golf since 1992 where he was a part of the first four person team to introduce course and slope rating in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. In 1993 he had his first experience as a rules official at the Men’s Match Play Championship at the Wildewood Golf Club. He has continued as an active rules official to this day. He served on the Board of the Manitoba Golf Association and Golf Manitoba from 1998 to 2004 where he held the position as Officials Chair for the duration of his tenure. An accomplished player, Don has also been club champions at the Polo Park Golf Club, the Assiniboine Golf Club and the Breezy Bend Country Club. He was also crowned the provincial senior champion in 1988. “Through golf, I’ve met and enjoyed friendships of many fine people both administratively and competitively and would do it all over again if I had the chance. It has been my way of putting something back into golf” “Everyone who knows Don knows what a personable and dedicated individual he is,” said Trish Jordan, president of Golf Manitoba. “He has made a significant contribution to our Association over many years of service as both a Board member and active volunteer. Don is a well-respected and knowledgeable rules official and is a very deserving recipient of this prestigious award.”

Along with the Distinguished Service Award, Golf Manitoba also recognized all volunteers within the Association for their years of service to the association. Recognition was given to those individuals reaching the five, ten, fifteen, twenty and twenty-five plus years of service benchmarks.
