Sharing advice with golfing pros:

I know what you’re thinking when you see my picture — now there’s an athlete. To be honest, I’m sick of people asking me whether I’m a professional or not. It’s tiresome, really. So, you won’t be surprised to hear that I played in Tuesday’s Players Cup Pro-Am. Along with fellow amateur and professional golfers, I tested my skills on Pine Ridge Golf Club. And I’m not shy to reveal that I shared.

Legends of Golf and Golfing

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The lineage of American golf and golfing champions all the way from Jones consists of many fine players. Five stand out above the rest : Sam Snead , Bryon Nelson , Ben Hogan , Arnold Palmer and of course Jack Nicklaus. Each of these careers was magnificent and significant to golf’s overall growth.

Contemporaries Snead, Nelson and Hogan born seven months apart in 1912 , ruled golf from 1936 , which was the year of Snead’s victory , to 1958 , when Arnold Palmer took over as the golf and golfer’s driving force in the game of golf.

Together the golfing trio combined for 195 golfing victories and 21 major golfing championships.

Dusty Origins of the Game of Golf

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

The exact origins of the game of golf remain a subject of constant and continual dispute and debate.

The Scottish Isles are generally regarded as the birthplace of the sport of golf and golfing in general.  References to golf and golfing date back to the era of the mid 1600′s.

A gaming game in written form is found in the description of Gowf  In fact King James forbid the playing of this “gowf”.  Archery for defense of the kingdom of Scotland was emphasized and Gowf was relegated downwards.  In fact the playing and practice of Gowf was a major capital offense.

Solar Powered Golf Carts Hit the Greens

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Golf, beyond the game itself, is perhaps best viewed as a venue for securing business deals. Who knew it would end up driving one of the solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions?

For a while now golf carts have been touted as an energy efficient alternative to gas-powered automobiles, but thanks to a new solar powered variety, cart manufacturers are raising the bar even further.

Suncatcher Golf Ltd. specializes in creating solar-powered sunroofs for golf carts and interestingly their biggest customers are not golf courses but rather people who use the carts to get around town.

This concept isn’t new and, as some readers may recall, using golf carts outside the golf course was popularized last summer when Leaf Rapids Mayor Ed Charrier called on residents to use the carts to get around regularly. “Why would you start your vehicle for a two-second ride uptown?” asked Charrier in this Victoria Colonist article. The Manitoba town even started offering incentives for residents to make the switch, including providing free golf carts with each of the 66 houses the town purchased, renovated and put on the market.

Of course there is a downside – solutions accompanied by new problems seems only par for the course when it comes to mitigating climate change. With increased use of golf carts as a means to decrease emissions and save energy, the number of golf cart injuries is also on the rise. According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the injury rate from golf cart accidents has risen more than 130 per cent since 1990 with nearly 150,000 golf cart-related injuries recorded in that time. One study says about 1,000 Americans are injured in golf cart accidents per month.

So while Suncatcher Golf Ltd. is using innovation to steer golf carts in the right direction environmentally, cart manufacturers may need to start outfitting them with safety features such as seatbelts and front brakes. Only then will the golf cart truly fit the environmental movement to a tee.

Of course, when it comes to the golf course, even though Mark Twain described the sport as “a good walk ruined”, dropping the cart altogether would improve your environmental score even further.

Cairns in top 30 at mid-amateur championship

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

A solid front nine and a somewhat less enjoyable back nine were enough to keep Dean Cairns among the best 30 mid-amateur male players in Manitoba.

Cairns stayed with his theme of consistent scores in the high 70s by shooting 78 on Thursday in the final round of the provincial men’s mid-amateur golf championship at Breezy Bend Country Club in Headingley to complete the tournament tied for 29th overall with a combined score of 24-over 312.

Brad Kirton of Winnipeg’s Pine Ridge Golf Club became a double winner on the Golf Manitoba circuit this season, following up his provincial men’s amateur championship earlier this month by claiming the mid-amateur title, as well. Kirton held on for the victory with a final-round 70 to come in at 6-under 282 for the tourney, with Peter More of Winnipeg’s Elmhurst Golf and Country Club falling just short with a 68 to place second at 5-under 283.

Cairns, the only Portager in the field, looked sharp right out of the gate on Thursday. He parred the first hole, birdied Nos. 2 and 3 and then parred the fourth to sit at 2-under for his round. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6 didn’t throw him off for long, as Cairns rebounded with three straight pars to close the front nine in 36, tying his best nine-hole total of the week.

Why is Golf the Hardest Game in the World ?

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

In golf the ball does not move on its own. On the average you have three minutes between golf shots.

In some sport such as baseball or soccer the player responds to the ball. In hockey as the New York Ranger Right Winger Max Labovitch noted you respond to the puck in motion. A golf ball just sits there forlorn looking at you.

In many sports you have but an instant to react to the ball. In golf you have a time period in which to mull over and think about your strategy and next course of action. Like chess this is what sets golf apart from other sports.

Exceptional Golf Courses of the World: The Royal Dornoch Golf Club of Sutherland Scotland

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Exceptional Golf Courses of the World: The Royal Dornoch Golf Club of Sutherland Scotland

The Royal Dornoch Golf Club of Sutherland Scotland’s history goes as far back as “the Dornoch Links” in the cost of the golf clubs and golf balls belonging to the young Earl of Sutherland in the time period of year of 1616. Its amazing that over all the millennia how little has changed in the minds and mentality of golfers , fellow golfers and those in charge of golf courses and their administration.

The description of the area surrounding the Dornoch Links at the time was “About this town along the sea coast are the fairest and largest links or green fields in any part of Scotland. Fitt for archery, golfing, ryding and all other sorts of exercises they doe surpass the fields of Monroe or St. Andrews”.

To this day the Royal Dornoch can be said to place consistently in among the top 100 of the greatest golf courses of the world.

It seems from the initial records of the course and young Earl of Sutherland’s golf equipment not much was recorded or noted until 1852, when George Dempster of Skibo, a St. Andrew’s golfer, played a round with a party over the Dernoch Links. Sometime in the time interval between the years of 1616 and 1852, the Sutherland Golfing Society was established, its members played at both the Dornoch and Golspie.

The Dornoch Links were at this early point only nine holes in extent. These original links were formed in much the same primal way as the “Old Course” at St. Andrews: an Ice Age glacier carved the land and deposited sand dunes which, over time were stabilized by the growth of seaside grasses, and finer grassy texture was added via inland grass seeds deposited on the linkland via the wooly coats of grazing sheep.

In 1883, the legendary “Old Tom” Morris came up from St. Andrews to lay out a formal nine holes. In 1866, at the direction of John Sutherland, another nine holes were added to the golfing course, and thus Dornoch now had 18 holes in its golf setup, as per the standard set at the St. Andrews golf course 122 years earlier.

Thus Dornoch not only was growing in the size of its golf course, but also in reputation. In 1894 it held its first golfing competition – the tournaments of their time.

28 men from Moray met 28 golfers from Dornoch at the Dornoch links. The Dornoch golfing team went on to solidly defeat their visitors 246 holes to none. Even more importantly the Moray men did not only take the defeat as not only a case of playing on home ground, but rather that the Dornoch course was anything but impressive. Indeed the historic report recorded was the “the links surpassed anything we imagined. The turf is of excellent quality. Everyone was charmed with the course”.

Thus it is no accident that the Royal Dornoch Golf Club at Sutherland in Scotland merits such a reputation – both as the historic golf course, and also has continued on with its fine reputation to be always regarded as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world. It’s no accident and it’s no accident that the greatest dream of many golf aficionados and golfers generally is to play and be challenged by this fine golf course which has always commanded great respect and merit.
