Wie excited to return to Canada and defend title

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Michelle Wie can’t wait to get back to Canada and defend her title at the CN Canadian Women’s Open.

The 21-year-old American is still looking for her first victory of 2011 with the top female golfers set to gather at Hillsdale Golf and Country Club in suburban Montreal later this month.

“I’ve never been to Montreal before so I’m especially excited to experience everything about it,” Wie said Wednesday on a conference call. “Being the defending champion I think it’s a great honour to be back. I’m very excited.”

The US$2.25-million event runs Aug. 25-28.

Wie earned her second career LPGA victory a year ago at Winnipeg’s St. Charles Country Club, where she finished three shots better than the field and was doused with champagne on the 18th green afterwards.

Her best result this year came at the season-opening event when she finished second in Thailand. Wie hasn’t posted a top-10 since the Sybase Match Play Championship in May.

“(The season got) off to a very solid start and obviously in the middle — you can see from my stats — I didn’t play as well as I want to,” she said. “It’s been a work in progress. Hopefully by the time my next tournament and the Canadian Open comes around I can start playing really good and have a really good solid finish.”

The long-hitting Wie has yet to play Hillsdale, but should find it to her liking. At more than 6,600 yards, it is one of the longest courses the LPGA players will face all season.

She’s hoping a return to Canada allows her to make more good memories both on and off the course.

“I’ve heard (Montreal) has a little bit of a European feel to it,” said Wie. “I always go to places with an open eye and open mind. I just want to eat around and go to different restaurants.

“If anyone has any suggestions for me I’d love to hear it.”

North claims 3rd straight PGA title

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

The talk of a Dean-asty may now begin.

Carman Golf Club head pro Dean North claimed his third straight Titleist Footjoy PGA Championship of Manitoba on Wednesday, rolling nearly unchallenged through the third and final round for a two-stroke victory at St. Boniface Golf Club.

North’s even-par 216 total bested Dauphin Lake’s Henry Hemmes by a pair and host pro and 2006 Manitoba champion Geoff Kehler by four.

It was North’s smallest margin of his three-year run — eight, three and now two shots were the advantages — but this one was undramatic on a windy afternoon at 6,348-yard St. Boniface.

North said he “kicked it home,” with bogeys at each of the final three holes.

“I think I had a six-shot lead with three to play,” North said. “With the wind being up, maybe I let my guard down a little bit and made some comfortable bogeys coming in.”

North has been first or second in each in the last seven Manitoba PGA championships.

He won in 2005 then finished second three times in a row before winning again in 2009.

“Yeah, I’m happy about winning three in a row,” he said after Wednesday’s four-over 76. “It just feels good to win. I put a lot of expectations on myself to play well and I try to tell myself that the results don’t matter, that I just want to shoot good scores and if I do that and somebody beats me, I can live with that. Whether I believe that I’m not sure.

“Luckily, I’ve improved the happiness after losing a few.”

North’s first-place cheque of $3,000 does plenty for the happy meter, too.

“When you’re knocking on the door and losing constantly, I guess there’s probably a certain motivation and pressure that goes with that,” he said of 2006-2008. “You can be very motivated to put your best foot forward, but there is pressure and nerves you feel.

“It’s like I told you a couple of years ago about the demons. They can tickle away in your brain but when you have a comfortable lead, they go away.”

Hemmes shot 75 on the final day to earn the runner-up spot, while Kehler was a steady 73 to pull up to third.

Thunder Bay’s Walt Keating, Jr., shot 74 for 221 and fourth place, five back of the winner, and first-day leader Glen Mills of Assiniboine rounded out the top five with 78-223.

John Irwin of Phantom Lake took the PGA of Manitoba senior division, winning the 36-hole competition over Quarry Oaks’ Dave Lavallee by three shots.

North, who started the final day with a three-shot advantage, three-putted the first hole but bounced right back with a birdie at No. 2.

A mid-round adjustment on Tuesday also helped matters.

Earlier this month, North turned over his left ankle during some horseplay, and has found it tender and delicate on the golf course since.

“When I rotate (during his swing) it just won’t allow it properly,” he said. “So I took my foot and opened it up (pointed more left) and did that mid-round Tuesday and I had been struggling and all of a sudden I could rotate and could hit it nice.

“I went five-under on the last 12 yesterday.”

And he rode that Wednesday all the way to his three-peat.

Assiniboine pro leads PGA field

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Dean North knows what it takes to win the Titleist Footjoy PGA of Manitoba title.

The Carman Golf Club professional has won it three times, but a conservative game plan Monday during the first round of the 2011 event has him in a tie for second place after narrowly missing a birdie putt and a share of the lead on the 18th hole at the St. Boniface Golf Club.

“Oh yeah, that putt you are just trying to be defensive because if you can two-putt from above the hole on there that’s all you are trying to do,” North said, reflecting on the opportunity lost.

North’s caddy since 2001, Jerry Hodson, agreed.

“That is a very tough putt. If you can two-putt from up there you take it every time. It went past the hole by about three or four feet, but the good news was that we touched the hole because you can’t stop the ball there. It’s either got to go in or its going to go past by about 10 feet, so we got a little lucky there.”

The lead heading into today’s second round belongs to Assiniboine Golf Club’s Glen Mills, who also played a conservative game but shot a 1-under-par 71. North, Niakwa’s Terry Reilly and Walter Keating Jr. from Thunder Bay’s Whitewater Golf Club hold down second place at even-par 72.

“I thought if I played fairly controlled golf it would be fairly simple,” said Mills. “I didn’t hit too many drivers off the tee today. I think I hit two drivers all day. I was taking the risk factor out because when I play irons off the tee I am pretty much ensuring that I am going to make par.”

Three players, Henry Hemmes of Dauphin Lake Golf Club, Transcona’s Pat Beaudoin and Brad Poleschuk of Bel Acres sit two shots off the lead.

Hodson says his job is to keep North on an even keel. “He wants to be aggressive and I am more conservative, so it is my job to keep him relaxed and calm. He has to go through me, but whatever he decides to play, that’s what he’ll play. So I just try to show him the conservative route.

“He is driven to play well. He wants to perform well. If you win, you win, but my job is to remind him, don’t get ahead of ourselves. If you come here thinking you are going to win it, then you forget what you are trying to do.”

North appreciates Hodson’s advice.

“You know what makes us kind of click and do well together is that we are such good friends,” said North. “Jerry has a pretty good knowledge of the game, so when I am thinking about shots that maybe I shouldn’t, he helps talk me out of it.”

Skelton wins men’s amateur golf title

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Jesse Skelton of Breezy Bend is the new Manitoba Men’s Amateur golf champion.

Skelton shot an even-par 70 on Portage Golf Club this afternoon in a wild wind to score a two-shot victory over Glenboro’s Josh Wytinck.

Wytinck birdied four of the last five holes at Portage but the pressure was a little too late to stop Skelton, who finished in a tie for second in last year’s amateur at his home club.

Skelton shot 10-under-par 270 at 6,311-yard Portage over the four days. when he put his wedge approach on the 18th green about 30 feet away, he had four putts to win and only required two.

Wytinck, who works at Pine Ridge, birdied the final hole from 12 feet and put up a 68 today to finish at 272.

Third, five back, was 36-hole co-leader Derek East of St. Charles, who struggled to a 74 today, albeit partly by being aggressive late in today’s round. That cost him a couple of bogeys as he was desperately trying to make up ground.

Pulling into fourth was two-time amateur champion Garth Collings of Breezy Bend, who was 69 for a 276 total.

Only three players broke par today while battling the howling west wind.

Clark, premiers drop by Canadian Open golf tournament

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Premier Christy Clark and other Canadian premiers made an appearance this morning at the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament at Shaughnessy Golf Course in Vancouver.

The premiers are in town for the Council of the Federation meeting over the next three days.

Clark said the premiers will discuss families, health care, jobs and the economy. She said the fact that seven of the premiers are facing fall elections — possibly including Clark herself — won’t affect their meetings.

“We don’t stop governing at any point in the election cycle,” she said.

This afternoon the premiers will be meeting with Aboriginal leaders to discuss ways to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people.

Musqueam First Nation Chief Ernie Campbell welcomed the premiers to British Columbia.

At Shaughnessy, all of the premiers, except Ontario’s Dalton McGuinty and Manitoba’s Greg Selinger who were not there, tried a putt at the golf course’s practice green. The tournament begins Thursdays and ends Sunday.

71… not bad for an amateur

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

It’s been a big year already for Myles Sullivan but there’s nothing like a little home cookin’ to bring it all together.

Sullivan, who won the Manitoba Junior Men’s Championship last week and recently committed to attend the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on a golf scholarship, started this week off shooting a one-over 71 on Monday in the opening round of the 2011 Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship on his home turf at Portage Golf Club.

Sullivan picked up a pair of birdies in the first round in stifling heat and blazing sun to sit tied for 18th among the field of 119 golfers from across the province heading into today’s second round. The cut will be made today to the lowest 60 players.

Derek East of the St. Charles Golf and Country Club had the best round of the day, firing a 65 on the par-70 layout. Defending champion Peter More shot one-under 69 along with four other players.

“It has been a pretty good year so far and I’m really happy to have the chance to play in this event at home. It’s a lot of fun and helps a bit with the travel costs to be able to stay at home,” said Sullivan, who graduated last month from Portage Collegiate.

“It was a bit of a disappointing start. I hit the ball pretty well but didn’t make a bunch of putts. It’s a four-day tournament and you’re not going to win it on the first day.”

American qualifier Tom Hoge fires 66 to win Canadian Tour’s Players Cup

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

American Tom Hoge fired a bogey-free round of 5-under 66 to win the Canadian Tour’s Players Cup on Sunday.

Hoge’s victory made him the first player to go through a Monday qualifier and then win the event since the Tour’s incorporation in 1986.

The 22 year old had nearly missed his tee time in qualifying, and needed a playoff to make the field.

“It’s kind of crazy that I was 10 minutes away from almost missing the qualifier and now here I am,” said Hoge, who finished the tournament at 16 under.

“I played great along the way and it has been a lot of fun with all of the support from the fans and volunteers. It has been a great week.”

The victory earned Hoge exempt status on the Canadian Tour for two years and a spot in the RBC Canadian Open next week in Vancouver.

“I think the exemption was in the back of every players mind this week,” said Hoge, who will be playing in his first PGA Tour event. “For me it was simple. I had to win while a bunch of other guys had to get into the top five, so I just put my head down and tried to get it done.”

Benjamin Alvarado of Chile fired a 66 to finish second, while American Josh Habig lost his third-round lead after a triple bogey on the fourth hole.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Habig, who finished tied for third with Brad Fritsch of Manotick, Ont. “It was a solid start, really. Then I was feeling comfortable and just lost my focus with my tee ball on four. ..

“I was over it and I heard something that kind of distracted me a little bit and I should have stepped away and I didn’t. That’s just bad discipline on my part and I put a bad swing on it.”

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., made a jump from 25th to seventh after firing a tournament-best score of 7-under 64.

The Players Cup was hosted by Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.
