Donald named PGA Tour Player of the Year

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Luke Donald was named the 2011 PGA Tour Player of the Year on Tuesday, becoming the first Briton to win the award since it started in 1990.

The award, decided by votes from PGA Tour players, was announced just two days after the current world number one became the first player to top the money-lists on both the European and U.S. Tours.

American Keegan Bradley, who won this year’s PGA Championship in Atlanta, was named the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year.

“My congratulations to Luke and Keegan for their award-winning accomplishments in 2011,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement.

“Both players had significant and impressive performances throughout the course of the year, and the member vote reflects the respect their peers have for them.”

Golf Canada to institute changes to Equitable Stroke Control

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

The Royal Canadian Golf Association (operating as Golf Canada) has announced a notable change to the Canadian methodology for calculating a golf handicap as it relates to Equitable Stroke Control (ESC).

The RCGA Handicap & Course Rating Committee recently approved a change to the long-standing Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) method, bringing the Canadian methodology into equivalency with current ESC calculations employed by the United States Golf Association (USGA).

The new Canadian methodology for Equitable Stroke Control will go into effect March 1, 2012 to coincide with the release of the 2012-2015 version of the Handicap Manual.

WHAT IS EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL (ESC)?

Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make Handicap Factors more representative of a player’s potential scoring ability. It sets a maximum number that a golfer can post on any hole depending on the player’s Course Handicap.

WHY THE CHANGE TO ESC METHODOLOGY?

The RCGA Handicap & Course Rating Committee approved the change after commissioning statistical research which revealed that the current Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) method causes differences in Handicap Factors that are not necessarily commensurate with a difference in ability, particularly for golfers in the higher half of each range of handicaps within the ESC table.

A golfer with a 1 handicap, for example, should not be subject to the same ESC score adjustments as a player with an 18 handicap when their abilities are so different. By reducing the size of the handicap ranges within the ESC table, those issues are mitigated. The new ESC method provides a more even distribution across a wide range of handicaps.

IMPACT OF THE NEW ESC METHODOLOGY:

Using maximum numbers (rather than adjustments being based on hole-par) facilitates simpler application and comprehension of the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) procedure. It also mitigates the affect of courses not allocating the proper par to holes as per RCGA guidelines.

Currently, in a head-to-head match, the lower handicap player has a better than 50% chance of winning. The new ESC will bring the odds closer to 50%.

The new ESC brings an RCGA Handicap Factor and USGA Handicap Index into virtual equivalency – an important consideration with the number of ‘snowbirds’ playing golf in certain parts of the United States during the winter months.

Canada will continue to use ‘Handicap Factor’ as the proper terminology related to handicapping.

Golf Canada will be communicating the changes to Equitable Stroke Control methodology to all Canadian golf industry groups including golf clubs that use Golf Canada’s Handicap Network and golfers that track an official handicap in advance of March 1, 2012.

CANADIAN GOLF HANDICAPPING – BY THE NUMBERS:

In 2011 alone, more than 350,000 golfers who maintain an official RCGA Handicap Factor posted close to 7 million scores through the Handicap Network portal on www.golfcanada.ca.

GOLF HANDICAP – DEFINED:

A handicap in golf is a numerical measure of a golfer’s playing ability based on the tees played for a given course. A handicap is used to calculate a net score from the number of strokes actually played, thus allowing players of different proficiency to play against each other on an equitable basis. The higher the handicap of a player relates to lesser golfing abilities relative to golfers with lower handicaps.

Work on Finnish spa set to begin this week

Friday, December 16th, 2011

When Norman and Robin Dupas had their epiphany about bringing a Finnish spa concept to Winnipeg nearly five years ago, never in their wildest dreams did they envision launching it in such a dynamic environment.

The combination of high-profile construction projects, the return of the NHL and newfound civic pride and confidence has the husband-and-wife team eager to get the shovel in the ground at Crescent Drive Golf Course, off South Drive in Fort Garry.

Quebec-based Nordik Spa-Nature will open its spa at the site late next year, with the couple serving as project promoters and investors. The nearly $7-million project will employ more than 110 people.

“We knew investment-wise that Winnipeg is a phenomenal place to invest,” Norman Dupas said. “Tonnes of people are investing here. A lot of people have realized this is a great place to do business.”

Martin Paquette, Nordik’s CEO, couldn’t believe the group’s good fortune, either.

“I’ve never been as positive and sure about my investment as I am today,” he said, noting within days of Nordik completing a leasing deal with the City of Winnipeg, the press conference announcing the relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg was held.

“It’s a wave that you feel here,” he said.

Nordik’s concept includes dry saunas, cold waterfalls and temperate pools, steam baths, outdoor hot baths, outdoor fireplaces and relaxation areas. Paquette said while spas are often thought to be for the wealthy, people can drop in at Nordik for $45 a day. Services such as massages or other body treatments are extra.

Civic dignitaries and economic-development executives said the Nordik investment is a continuation of the momentum built up by the likes of the new stadium being constructed for the CFL’s Blue Bombers, a new downtown hotel, the IKEA development and millions of dollars of investment at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.

Mayor Sam Katz said it takes a rare commitment for entrepreneurs who have been successful in one part of the country to expand to another.

“It’s nice to see a Quebec-based company bringing something new to our city. We’ve earned the reputation as the best city in Canada to invest in,” he said.

Golfers need not worry anything will happen to the nine-hole, par-three course in Fort Garry. It will be open for business next spring. Paquette said the rundown clubhouse will be torn down today and a new one will be built adjacent to the spa. One kitchen will serve both facilities during the summer.

Canadian Tour wrapping up at Desert Dunes

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

The Canadian Tour makes its final stop of the season this weekend in the California desert and Winnipeg connections are everywhere.

Touring pros Tyler Mancini and Scott Loewen are in the field at the $150,000 Desert Dunes Classic in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

The Desert Dunes course, a Robert Trent Jones design, was purchased by a Canadian group (mainly partners from Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary in 2009) and it has hired Winnipegger Pat O’Donnell as its director of golf.

“Lots of old connections here and the reason we’re involved is that there didn’t seem to be much point in ending the Canadian Tour season in August,” O’Donnell said from his office.

The tournament is a great bridge for those aspiring Canadian Tour stars, like Desert Dunes defending champion Adam Hadwin, who are trying to stay sharp while traversing the tightrope that is PGA Tour qualifying school.

Hadwin, by the way, has received an exemption straight to Q school finals based on playing five PGA Tour events this season and making five cuts, worth more than $440,000.

Others, like the two young Winnipeg pros, are working more on their development in the pro game.

“Playing this one, then will be looking at the Gateway and All-American tours (mainly in the U.S. southwest) over the winter,” Mancini said from the desert this week.

Both he and Loewen plan similar schedules, with an eye on requalifying for the 2012 Canadian Tour in late winter and the spring. Of course, assuming they don’t find the pot of gold at the end of the desert rainbow this week.

This week’s tournament includes a 14-player celebrity division playing the tournament tees. It includes the likes of Rick Rhoden and Ozzie Smith.

CanTour regulars who ought to be in the hunt in addition to Hadwin are Jim Rutledge, Notah Begay III, Byron Smith, Stuart Anderson and Chile’s Hugo Leon, who could win the 2011 money title with a high finish.

– Golf Canada has chosen its 2011 membership contest winners from across the country.

In Manitoba, the members, league players and regulars have brought honour to one of Winnipeg’s municipal traditions, Windsor Park Golf Course, for having the most Golf Canada membership card activations in the province.

The Golf Canada card program began in earnest in 2010 as the national governing body tries to enhance its membership benefits beyond that of a simple handicap card.

– One of golf’s most enthusiastic newcomers has lost his battle with cancer.

Transcona Golf Club’s Andy Jacobsen, 50, died Oct. 27.

Jacobsen took up the game “all-in” in 2009 and as a virtual beginner, played more than 300 rounds in 2010, including the Manitoba mid-amateur championship.

His illness limited his on-course action to only a few holes in 2011, according to friends.

Family and friends will gather today at 1 p.m. at the Transcona Golf Club for a celebration of his life. It will include a 21-golfer salute of tee shots.

Winnipeg golf course to get $6M spa facelift

Friday, December 9th, 2011

A Scandinavian-style outdoor spa will be built at a Winnipeg golf course, as part of a new deal between the city and business partners.

The clubhouse at the Crescent Drive Golf Course will be torn down this week to make way for a Nordik Spa-Nature franchise that will open next fall, city officials announced Tuesday.

First opened in Quebec in 2005, Nordik Spa-Nature is modelled on Nordic spas, featuring steam rooms, saunas and hot and cold baths.

Officials involved with the project say they hope the spa will revive the city-owned golf course.

“The whole idea of this project was that it was a different idea,” Mariette Mulaire of ANIM, a Manitoba bilingual trade group that pitched the concept, told CBC News.

“We’re bringing something new to Winnipeg. It’s not competing with present stuff.”

The spa is the result of more than two years of work by the City of Winnipeg and ANIM, along with two local investors and Yes! Winnipeg, the city’s economic development partner.

The city has been struggling in recent years to stem losses from the 13 golf courses it owns.

Officials are now looking at proposals to revive seven other golf courses.

“I think the dream is endless,” Mulaire said.

“I think you can really look at bold ideas that correspond with the type of golf course … if you can identify something different.”

Mayor Sam Katz said it’s too soon to say what will happen to the other courses, but he said the city is open to new ideas.

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

The Breezy Bend blaster just scored the biggest trophy of his burgeoning career.

Long-ball hitter Jesse Skelton won the 2011 Amateur Golfer of the Year Award at Golf Manitoba’s AGM held at the new Southwood Golf and Country Club on Tuesday night.

“It feels really good,” Skelton said. “I’m really excited about it. Outside of winning a tournament, this is the highest recognition you can get.”

Skelton, 23, emerged victorious over nominees Southwood’s Winnie Hyun, Portage la Prairie’s Myles Sullivan and Josh Wytinck of Pine Ridge.

Skelton earned the honour after winning the Nott Autocorp Manitoba Men’s Amateur Championship for the first time, and the Manitoba Match Play Championship. He was also a member of the Willingdon Cup team, competed at the national men’s amateur championship in Winnipeg and finished sixth at the Glencoe Invitational in Calgary.

“Winning the Manitoba Amateur tournament was the best highlight,” said the University of Manitoba commerce student who was also a member of the Breezy Bend team that finished second at the Provincial Interclub Championship. He finished second in the individual division.

Skelton is also a member of the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s golf team that had three top-five finishes in the fall schedule. He is currently ranked 13th on the Golf Canada national order of merit.

Skelton thanked all of the people who helped along the way, such as Bisons golf coach Garth Goodbrandson, Breezy Bend legend Garth Collings and his parents.

“Garth (Collings) was always looking out for me and calling me to ask how I did at tournaments,” Skelton said. “And if I didn’t do well, we’d usually talk it over, and I would always do well after talking to him.”

Hyun was a first-time nominee who won the Provincial Junior Women’s Championship and was fourth at the Provincial Women’s Amateur Championship. She was a member of Manitoba’s Western Canada Games team that won a bronze medal, and finished fifth individually. On the national scene, Hyun made the cut at both the National Junior Girls Championship (finishing 62nd) and the National Women’s Amateur Championship (70th). He finished eighth at the men’s provincial amateur championship and tied for eighth at the CN Prairie Future Links event. Sullivan is ranked 10th in the Golf Canada national junior men’s order of merit and 28th on the national men’s order of merit.
