Four of Manitoba golf’s finest wore orchids Monday at the McPhillips Station Casino as players Gary Kullman, Judi Lidstone, Derek Ingram and builder Walter Perchaylo were ushered into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame.
Kullman, 60, excelled as a junior, amateur and mid-amateur while playing on 14 provincial teams.
Skinny, as he was known to his close friends, won the Manitoba men’s amateur title three times (1971, ’73 and ’76) and the Manitoba match play crown twice (1978 and ’79). He was also a finalist for the Manitoba amateur golfer of the year award in 1976.
Kullman thanked his mentors from his junior days at Rossmere.
“Steve Bannatyne, Steve Homeniuk, and Barry Chipka. I learned so much golf from those guys,” he said.
“This makes all the practice and effort I put into the game worth while,” said Lidstone, 59, who won four provincial women’s senior championships in 2002, ’03, ’06 and ’07. She was also runner-up in the Canadian senior championship in 2004 and a finalist for Manitoba amateur golfer of the year in 2003.
For her, golf became both and escape and therapy. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago, and that just made it more rewarding for me to golf. I’m still in treatment now, so any time I can golf I am happy.”
Perchaylo, who died Aug. 13, 2008, entered as a builder.
“I am extremely proud of him,” said his wife Helen Shannon, who represented him at the induction. “I knew that this was something brewing before, but it has finally come, and I am grateful. I wish he were here to see this and accept it.”
Perchaylo served as the golf superintendent at Pine Falls Golf Club from 1960-66, then took over as superintendent at Pine Ridge from 1967-87, as well as the neighbouring Elmhurst Golf and Country Club at the same time from 1968-74.
Perchaylo also served on the board of the Manitoba Golf Superintendents Association for many years.
Ingram, 41, was the MPGA Player of the Year twice won the MPGA championship in 2008. In 2009 he was appointed as head coach of the women’s national team. Last August he switched over to the men’s team.
Twice named the PGA of Canada’s teacher of the year, Ingram hasn’t forgotten his mentor, former Sandy Hook Golf Club professional Jim Doyle. “Without him, and the Doyle family, I probably wouldn’t even be golfing today. They sparked a passion and a love for the game into me,” he said.
